You can run letters together in a way that saves time when writing, but it’s taught as an arbitrary hyper-specific script with exact prescribed forms you have to copy. In the case of the chancery style I posted, it was mean for people that had to write a lot of documents like the church, courts and universities, so it being hard to read for the semi-literate wasn't an issue and it was faster than earlier blackletters, also the words were more distinct from each other so it was superior if you were used to it. They had to abbreviate most common words because paper was expensive, but that wasn't an issue because everyone knew what the abbreviations meant, it also was considered pretty and very fancy, so they kept modifying it to make it prettier and fancier until the point it became too ornamented and kind of a pain so they changed it for something more readable.

The format is only worse for use on digital platforms where space is more valued than it is on a wall, but the actual clocks themselves are equivalent to anyone who isn't failing a very simple knowledge/reasoning check. Cursive was developed in the first place as a "faster" version of traditional handwriting for the fast and efficient documenting of information prior to the invention of the Typewriter.
