I only just watched Dr. Caligari for the first time a few months ago, a 1989 Avant Garde take on the 1920 black and white German expressionist classic The Cabinet Of Dr. Caligari, and twice in a row, once with its original mono soundtrack and then again with the audio commentary provided by Director Stephen Sayadian who Co-wrote the movie with screenwriter Jerry Stahl (who later Co-wrote Bad Boys 2! and worked on tv shows such as ALF!?!) and also acted as the films Production Designer.
Have to say that I loved it just for how hermetically sealed it was in its own universe.
This is because it was shot 100% on soundstages similar to how Director Maro Bava preferred to shoot as it allowed for complete environmental control as seen in his various films such as Planet of the Vampires.
I just love the sense of artifice, that nothing is real but made to believe it is and eschews "realism" which is what Dr. Caligari creates while it's an incredible accomplishment given how low the budget was, approx. 140k. Even more impressive is that everything is done with such surgical precision from the sets, costumes and cinematography which is stunning in Mondo Macabro's 4k release.
Even more impressive is the performances that operate with an incredible level in synchronicity both in the individual movements of each actor but also fellow Co-stars who are always in perfect unison with each other.
