I only like slashers that have a constructed atmosphere around the slashings like MBV, f13 1, Halloween, Scream, NOES, Cherry Falls, etc. Hell even Eli Roth does a good job at it even if his characters are annoying and unlikable. if it’s just a bunch of filler as an excuse to get to the kills or just focuses on the killer it’s boring.

If you like Night of the Demon(1957) or 60s gothic stuff like The Innocents (which the main actor was also in), this is a good one. Very suspenseful with an intense final act; one of the best endings I've seen in a long time.

No, but apparently you're okay with having high contrast over having colour saturation. It's a problem with a lot of digital prints (regardless of resolution or aspect ratio) that colour matching isn't their strongest suit
Which is fine if you have audiences who want to only watch it on a backlit screen which takes some of the curse off it, but when you're watching movies you have seen before in cinemas, it does make you wonder why they took the colour out, dyed it blue, and make all the whites cold whites even where they should be much softer and warmer. It's why a lot get regraded for colour after a furore around their release from fans who know the film should not look like that.

I only just watched Dr. Caligari for the first time a few months ago, a 1989 Avant Garde take on the 1920 black and white German expressionist classic The Cabinet Of Dr. Caligari, and twice in a row, once with its original mono soundtrack and then again with the audio commentary provided by Director Stephen Sayadian who Co-wrote the movie with screenwriter Jerry Stahl (who later Co-wrote Bad Boys 2! and worked on tv shows such as ALF!?!) and also acted as the films Production Designer.

Have to say that I loved it just for how hermetically sealed it was in its own universe.

This is because it was shot 100% on soundstages similar to how Director Maro Bava preferred to shoot as it allowed for complete environmental control as seen in his various films such as Planet of the Vampires.

I just love the sense of artifice, that nothing is real but made to believe it is and eschews "realism" which is what Dr. Caligari creates while it's an incredible accomplishment given how low the budget was, approx. 140k. Even more impressive is that everything is done with such surgical precision from the sets, costumes and cinematography which is stunning in Mondo Macabro's 4k release.

Even more impressive is the performances that operate with an incredible level in synchronicity both in the individual movements of each actor but also fellow Co-stars who are always in perfect unison with each other.

This is because Sayadian has a background in theater and it shows in every frame with most of the cast being stage trained performers.

Whether you like the performances or not they each achieved absolute perfection in whatever scene they were in, no matter how degenerate, and this is because of their ample rehearsal time as it's repeated in the extras that planning is everything and why everyone is simpatico with each other as there was no time for improvisation given the budget with everyone on the same page in regards to the type of movie they were making.

It was actually Brandon Tenold's review of Dr. Caligari is what inspired me to finally watch it despite being aware of it most of my life.....

https://youtu.be/5KvgeFbC7dU?si=eHYtxHrmzTydo-IS

While I think he's a bit harsh on it and say what you will, I hate using this description, but I consider it a work of art as it has such a singular vision executed to perfection, depending on how you look at it, achieving exactly what they set out to do and for such a small movie that should be applauded while I can confidently place it alongside Funeral Parade of Roses (1969) as another Avant Garde masterpiece!!!FACT!!!

Here you go, Anon, I think I've created your ideal version. Low detail, high saturation. The way the movie was meant to be seen.

Good review anon, I haven't seen it but I love movies that are filmed on indoor sets. It's the common case of restrictions forcing creatives to create something beautiful and unique. I wish more directors would shoot for something other than drab realism.

That's a bit closer, though again on a backlit screen those blues will be more blue (blue orange contrast is more common in older films too, which is why getting a blue light with no warmth from them is hard)
It is weird you're trying to use crispness to see grain though you don't have to justify your purchases to me. It's just that you really posted a white fire next to an orange one and are too used to your screen to see why people might comment on fire not being orange

Thank you anon while I just got the Mondo Macabro release of Sayadian's previous film Cafe Flesh (1982) last week and looking forward to checking it out.

I also have to say that the only two relatively big budget movies that were shot exclusively on soundstages and caught my attention that came to mind are Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, Sin City and you could probably put A Scanner Darkly in there as well while it feels strange that they all came out around the same time, approx. 20 years ago.

Now, yes, CGI is the tool of the Devil and that was mostly used but it gave them a distinctive look and feel completely detached from reality and why I like them but understand if you don't.
