the idea of a superhero didn't crystalize until after the apollo missions, where you have the JFK quote about how "We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard." This marks when superman fully transitions from a cocky asshole (we're ignoring the Dave Fleischer stuff, as that is also ideal superman long before JFK) who can effortlessly thwart any "nefarious plot," and the character becomes not just superhuman, superior to man in general. He becomes an ideal for all humanity to strive to even emulate.

Hollywood knows it's good but do not know how to capture Donner's vision of Superman properly. Singer and Gunn tried and failed. Snyder moved away from Donner's version and was somewhat okay. Smallville was close enough and Reeve thought so as well.
