I wish we could get more Korean remakes of Jdrama.
Their adult drama are way more serious, subdued with less random flourishes, stupid tropes, dumb filler and wtf moments than kdramas, but their productions values are usually very low compared to their korean counterparts.

I think that's why the korean remake of Mother is such a wonderful and unusual kdrama. Acting, sets, soundtrack etc. is way superior to the original while keeping with the serious and focused writing style of the jap original.

That said I've only watched a handful, and only melodramas. Will watch the Han Hyo Joo jap romcom, Romantics Anonymous, October 2025.

To be fair, you have to have a very high emotional IQ to understand Korean dramas. The storytelling is incredibly nuanced, and without a deep understanding of generational trauma, class stratification, and Confucian moral codes, most of the emotional beats will simply go over a Western viewer’s head. There’s also the poetic pacing, which is deftly layered into the mise en scene, a subtle nod to the shamanic roots of Korean folk narrative.

I’m smirking right now just imagining one of those uncultured plotfags scratching their heads, wondering why nothing “happens” in My Mister while I’m busy crying because he offered her a pair of headphones.
