Just finished watching S2 of this. Why is it so bad? My brain hasn't fully processed exactly why it sucks, but it sucks. It feels more like a jaded lesbian's fanfiction than an ASOIAF story.

It took a story about how power corrupts regardless of gender and perverted it into a man-bad, woman-good cartoon show. S2 is also full of character's (mostly the women) pussyfooting around and not doing anything beyond a cycle of "we need to prepare for war....no actually we need le stop the war...now we're back to preparing...but no we can't have war what about the heckin civilirinos?". So S2 basically ends in the same place as S1 did, with most things that should be of lasting consequence (Luke's death, Aegon's son's death) being swept aside and forgotten like they didn't happen.

It is. Sara Hess (lesbian) and Ryan Condal (shit) specifically set out to do the Dance of Dragons revolving around the repressed lesbian friendship of Rhanyra and Alicent. With various girl boss moments like murdering a crowd of peasants added in case you thought they were being too subtle.

Because nothing fucking happens. Itโ€™s just rich niggas sitting around in castles bitching about other rich niggas in other castlesโ€. We had a full season, and the pieces on the board barely moved. It didnโ€™t help that WB being broke forced them to cut the last two episodes, which would have been some big fuck off battle, so it goes out on a squeak fart, and thatโ€™s the note weโ€™re left on for two fucking years.

They really had a chance to win back a lot of that GoT audience, but have completely fumbled it.

1. Its badly paced. Alot of filler for no reason.
2. Plot doesnt feel connected. People jump, teleport - or whatever.
3. Most of the 'drama' works only because the pretense is that these people cannot sit down and actually overcome their disagreement.
4. Lots of 'wow' moments undermine the reality of the original. People get away with so much shit.
5. Only good character is Sir Cole, as he seems only one that isnt perfect. He is character that struggles with himself.
6. Remember the Harrenhal dream sequences? Complete filler? Yeah, nice.

im sure i can think more

A few reasons:
>fuck all happens in the show
>it just constantly repeats storylines/character arcs
>random lesbians and late season GoT retarded women ruler style nonsense
>Rhaenyra never fucked her son
>Rhys Ifans/Otto was barely in it

It's kind of funny, they were so focused on making girlboss shit that all the female characters ended up being and unbelievably boring slogfest, and since they made all the male characters evil, patriarchal, degenerate and foolish, they end up getting all the memorable scenes and moments. Like a fucking meme character like Ulf is still more interesting to watch than 95% of the copy-pasted female characters.

There are no moments of joy in this show - no reward for all the grim, dark scenes of brooding malaise and political strife. No moments of levity, humor, or humanity that GoT had in droves in the first 5-6 seasons. It takes itself so seriously and gives nothing in return (not even good consistent action or fantasy scenes) in the form of likeable characters. No one is really memorable aside from some of the "bad" guys but even they are forgettable. It's a show about dragons and grand political fights and has none of them. It's simply a dark and joyless show. The acting can't save it, the writing is well executed but so generic at the script level that even the good actors can't save it (but think of the rat catchers!!) and sadly even the sets are repeated so frequently with so little to speak of in them (oh cool another dark gloomy drippy grim castle room with no color or memorable elements?) that there's nothing redeeming.

I'll still angrily watch the next season but I don't really want to

I can't get over the tonal backflips that scene does.

Mysaria just trauma dumped all over Rhaenyra, telling her about how her father raped her, got her pregnant, and then CUT THE BABY OUT OF HER.

Rhaenyra hears all of that, and apparently that type of thing just gets her panties soaked? Fucking Targs man: "Your dad raped you? That's so fucking hot. Let's make out!"

Alicent will be present at Dragonstone for Sunfyre's dinnertime.

Aegon will give the order, then Alicent will run to Rhaenyra's side and dare Aegon/Sunfyre to eat both of them. They will have a moment together, and then both get eaten.

No, there was a lot of decent character writing in Season 1, some of which actually improved on the books' versions of characters (Aemond especially). It had missteps, but what doesn't? Something noticeably seemed to shift in Season 2. The weird insistence on not making Rhaenyra and Alicent enemies, for instance, even though Season 1 made it clear any former friendship was gone. Suddenly characters are making wild shifts for no apparent reason. It definitely feels like some idiot shipper has more say and is trying to keep the characters friendly in spite of them being on opposite sides of a savage civil war.

They waste precious screentime trying to redeem Rhaenyra's character from s1 by having her meet with Alicent to prevent war. But the whole ordeal just makes her seem illogical and out of touch. So instead of a banger finale, we get confirmation that she's trash.

>Why is it so bad?
1. Failure to properly adapt Blood and Cheese which was supposed to be a Red Wedding level event in the story
2. The whitewashing and pacification of Rhaenyra
3. Jace Targyean being stripped of all agency and personality
4. The blatantly schizophrenic writing. In season 1, Raenys literally murders dozens of civilians when she bursts into the coronation room to do...nothing. This is fine apparently. In season 2, Aegon hangs a few ratcatchers after his wife is assualted and his infant child's throat is slit. This is a crime against humanity and a political shitshow somehow...
5. Insane amounts of filler and show original content that does nothing but bog down the story as a whole. Corly's scenes with his bastards, the Lannister lord wrestling with a tranny in the mud, the various rants about how this is a man's world where women have no power or representation (which is frankly irrelevant to the actual themes of the story)
6. The Riverlands filler arc with Daemon. Its bad and none of it is in the books. In the books, Daemon rides in and instantly rallies the land to his cause. In the show, a nonsensical subplot about Daemon is added where he's being date raped and lectured by a fat, ugly witch (who is described as a femme fatale seductress in the books lol). When Daemon isn't drugged out of his mind, he's struggling to rally the land and inspire loyalty. Which makes no sense in the context of the story because everyone there is supposed to be a hardcore Rhaenyrafag
7. The butchery of Aemon's character. Aemon in the books is sharply loyal to his family and a confident and capable warrior. In the show, he's a traitor and an insecure loser who spends all of his money on prostitutes twenty years older than him because he has mommy issues.

No, all the signs were there in S1. Just look at episode 8. An episode generally well liked by the audience.

Alicent sees Rhaenyra smile at her during dinner and decides to become her #1 fan. This is the woman who plotted against Rhaenyra for 20 years and lunged at her with a knife, and now she watched a man get executed for telling a truth that's against Rhaenyra's interests. Alicent reacts to all this by.. wanting to become best friends again? Alicent's schizo traitor lesbian arc didn't begin in S2, it began here.

In the book Viserys gets overzealous while defending Rhaenyra's transgressions, and the Throne 'punishes' him for it. The second he calls Vaemond's accusations lies, the Throne cuts him so deeply that he never sits on it again. He can force the entire kingdom to keep quiet about the truth but the main symbol of monarchy & power directly defies him. In E08 this is completely changed into Viserys finally finding strength and sitting the throne without issue in order to defend Rhaenyra.

In the book Rhaenyra kills Vaemond and feeds his body to her dragon, and wants the throne because she believes it is her right: she is the future queen and shows no mercy to the traitors who defy her. In E08 however she's a shocked bystander when Daemon beheads Vaemond (who all but begs to be executed) and she only seeks the throne because a prophecy about saving the world requires her to be queen. This prophecy stuff and Rhaenyra not wanting to do anything didn't start in S2, it was already fucking with the story here.

Alicent misinterpreting Vissy T's deathbed words in order to give Aegon a claim to the throne. This is ridiculous because Aegon already has a claim, his birthright. The Dance was always meant to be about the Targaryens spitting their own succession claim in two, between preferred claimant named by royal decree (Rhaenyra) and lawful claimant by birthright (Aegon) which spirals into a succession crisis.

When the show rooted Aegon's ascension in a lie/misunderstanding it completely destroyed his claim in the eyes of the audience, because now whenever a character says "Viserys made Aegon king" in S2 the audience will of course respond with "no he didn't." The reason S2 feels like the writers are beating you over the head with RIGHTFUL HEIR Rhae vs FRAUD AEGON is because they already irreversibly set this dynamic up in S01E08.

And so on. That's just episode 8's problems. I'd hit the character limit several times over describing how all of S1 laid the foundation for S2's retardation. This isn't to say S1 was awful, it was way better than S2. But it's not like the S2 brainrot came out of nowhere, it started in S1.

8. The butchery of Alicent. In the books, Alicent is sharply loyal to her family and her house. In the show, she wants hates them and wants to sacrifice them so she can be with Rhaenyra who wants to kill her entire family (even though in the books she fucking hates her)
9. The literal lore rape. We have a royal noble (Rhaena) running around in bandit infested lands alone and nothing happens. We have a noblewoman (Baela) turning down being the heir to the second most powerful house in the country so the show can have a girlboss moment. We have the peasants praising Rhaenyra even though she's the reason they're all starving and dying en mass. None of it makes sense.
10. They're straight up cutting out characters key to the story. Maelor being removed is gonna have massive fucking ripple effects for the story as a whole. We're two seasons in and Daeron isn't even in the show yet, so when he shows up, its gonna look like he came out of fucking nowhere.
There's more that's wrong with the series but I'm gonna stop here.

The actors suggested it lol which makes it worse. From a narrative and character writing standpoint, it makes no sense for those two to be in love or kiss each other. It simply happened because one of the actors was horny and wanted to kiss her co-star and instead of the writers and developers saying no, they let it happen, at the cost of the story making sense.

Of ALL the complaints about the show, Emma D'Arcy is not one of them, she's a good actress who looks nice on screen. The issue is in writing her character to be completely passive and things just happen around her.
"But she had short hair in real life!" is not a complaint about the TV show.

She's not that great, and she's not a good fit for the character she's playing. Emma would be amazing for Visenya in an Aegon's Conquest adaptation. But she just doesn't come across as Rhaenyra from Fire & Blood, Rhaenyra's supposed to be a slightly deranged brat.

md5: eba0df1782f61634b274530a3752eb87๐Ÿ”
George R. R. Martin awoke to the sound of the old Maester knocking at the door. A raven had arrived, he said, bearing dark news.

Dark wings, dark words, George thought, clambering out of bed like a crab.

He misliked all of this. Winter was coming, and good news were scarce, George knew.

"The fans, milord," the Maester said. "They have come."

George donned his battle raiment and clasped a pair of suspenders over his trousers. The fans had come for their book. My book, George corrected silently. It had been two-and-ten years and the Winds remained thoughts in George's head. He'd done much and more to spin those thoughts into ink, yet the papers remained white still, as white as Ser Arthur Dayne's cloak.

George broke his fast in the dark halls of Martynfell with black bacon and black bread, washing it all down with the finest of Californian red. He opened his laptop and visited his blog. The Winds would have to wait. There was a war to be fought, against the might of HBO and Ryan Condal. This was a mummer's farce and George had had enough of their japes. He'd thought of this half a hundred times or near as much as makes no matter. But now the King in Sante Fe stirred and Ryan Condal would dance no longer.

A trumpet blew in the distance. George took Fatslayer from the wall and clapsed it over his belt. The fans had arrived, banners fluttering in the winds. Here and there were the sigils of /got/ and /got/hotd/ and many more besides. They wanted his book, but he had none to give. Had he been that writer they thought him to be, he would have given them all that and more.

Gods, he'd been strong then! Where did that peerless writer go, George wondered. Did he die at Comic Con? Did he die when he went to Japan to be Miyazaki's Hand in the making of Elden Ring? Mayhaps Benioff knew, mayhaps they all knew and even Moon Boy too for all he cared. None of that mattered. That man was gone, and George was all that remained. He'd given his fans his word. But words are winds.

The moment Alicent randomly brought up fucking Cole to Rhaenyra, I had to roll my eyes because it felt like the scene was stripped straight from twitter. Aegon calling himself the realm delight came from nowhere, and I was like why? Rhaenyra's rant against Daemon after the baby beheading was comical. She listed every single issue a 2024 genzmillenial would cry about word for word. It was bizarre.

Also the writers donโ€™t like the setting. They donโ€™t want to write a story about a feudal, patriarchal society - they want to write a story that speaks to modern sensibilities. Criston canโ€™t be a true kingmaker because thatโ€™s misogynistic and boring. Instead, itโ€™s more fun if heโ€™s an incel bitch boy who canโ€™t get over a fling from the past.

The show made up a misunderstanding because it refuses to address the legality issues that are at the core of the Dance and that could make Aegon's ascension a rational decision, because those issues hinge on ideals that don't align with modern sensibilities. Thatโ€™s why no one in this series has any concept of honor or in universe morality or chastity - the writers are projecting modern ideals onto this universe and using characters as their mouthpieces.

TLDR This show is a complete mess if your IQ is above 90, and its true form would be a girly soap drama set in a high school.

George R.R. Martin gave description of Rhaenyra to the artist commissioned to do the portraits of Targaryen dynasty's important figures:
>"Pampered from an early age, she was a pudgy girl and a stout woman, with a thick waist and a very large bosom. She was very proud and stubborn, and there was a certain petulance to her small mouth. Rhaenyra did have the silver-gold hair of the Targaryens, which she wore long and braided in the manner of Aegon the First's warrior wife Visenya. Rhaenyra was no warrior herself. She always dressed richly, favoring purple and maroon velvets and golden Myrish lace in intricate patterns. Her bodice often glittered with pearls and diamonds, and there were always rings on her fingers. Whenever she was anxious, she would turn them compulsively, round and round. Though Rhaenyra could be charming, she was quick to anger and never forgot a slight.

Show Rhaenyra is not the worst thing about the show but D'Arcy is miscast.

It's strange as well because they had two great comic actors, namely Paddy and Rhys Ifans, who could have added some levity and humour, but they completely squandered them, making them churn out the same po-faced dialogue as everyone else. Rhys Ifans looks bored as fuck in the show, and I'm not surprised.

it also completely undermines the question of their parentage as a thing, because in the source material there was at least some kind of plausible deniability but she's literally pushing out lily white children with a black husband. the idea that they're meant to be offended at someone questioning the parentage of her children is so laughable and unbelievable. and what about her inlaws, is the black valeryon dude supposed to not realize that his grandchildren aren't related to him, like is he supposed to be fucking stupid or like just resigned to accept it?

for fuck's sake, Daemon married one too and he had nothing but mulatto children. it just defies all logic.

Rhaenyra had 1h 44 minutes in S2. Imagine having nearly 2 hours of screen-time in a single season and still have done absolutely nothing worthwhile in that time.

For reference: here are some GoT characters who had less screentime in their entire story arc:
Bronn - 1 hour 4 minutes
Ramsey - 1 hour 6 minutes
Joffrey - 1 hour 10 minutes
The Hound - 1 hour 12 minutes
Stannis - 1 hour 13 minutes
Robb - 1 hour 17 minutes
Margarey - 1 hour 18 minutes
Tywin - 1 hour 18 minutes
Catelyn - 1 hour 22 minutes
Bran - 1 hour 26 minutes
Varys - 1 hour 41 minutes
Ned - 1 hour 39 minutes
Littlefinger - 1 hour 42 minutes

Every one of these characters have a handful of iconic scenes that have been more memorable than anything that Rhanerya has done this season.

HOTD's idea of a "dragonrider's death" being something noble or dignified is nonsensical.

Most dragonriders before the Dance died either of old age or because a sharp object stabbed them. If you could ask each of them how they'd want to die none of them would say "I hope somebody incinerates me." The only ancient Targaryen perhaps died by incineration was Aegon the Uncrowned, and nobody would ever call his death noble or dignified. Among the many ways to die in Westeros, incineration's gotta be among the most horrible ones.

Also to die a "dragonrider's death" shouldn't you die riding a dragon? If being burned alive by a dragon gives you a dragonrider's death then there's some sheep in the Vale right now dying as true dragonriders lol.

If you saw a factory worker jump under a hydraulic press and get crushed to death you certainly wouldn't call it 'a true factory worker's death' or anything like that. There's nothing noble in being burned alive. I have no idea where the showrunners pulled this idea of a "dragonrider's death" being something to aspire towards, though it's obvious why they're doing it: early damage control for Rhaenyra's ending.

I am like 99,9% certain the writer clowns wanted to merge Daeron and Aemond into 1 character (why Aemond in S1 was so different than unhinged gremlin from the book) and only after did they realize SHIT WE NEED DAERON FOR THE PLOT and because GRRM/fans asked wtf is going on. So now they clumsily added Daeron into the story and spedrun Aemonds fall into insane villainy.

Daeron was clearly not meant to exist in S1. The dinner scene makes it clear, and the way Alicent and Viserys talk about their family. So basically Daeron is a phoned-in character that the showrunners are probably angry about because they hoped they could scrap him and the entire Reach storyline or just roll it all into Aemond to cut down on the amount of dragon CGI they gotta pay for.

the flames are so hot i have to imagine that you die pretty quickly if you're directly in the stream. but dying by being burned to death by normal fire is probably not fun, yeah.

Game of Thrones was way more memorable you had deserts, beaches, burning trees, fields, snow capped mountains.

This show didn't need to be dark it can't carry it. Imagine if the yellow guys were bright yellow. Greens were bright greens it would be a lot like Romance of the Three Kingdoms or something. Would make for way better shots. Also they are flying on dragons blue skies would have been awesome.

Why are they doing Dunk and Egg? From what I've read, it's just them walking around and that's it.

How the fuck did they not capitalise on doing Roberts rebellion or something. Especially during that 2 year break before the GOT finale.

The fact they fumbled and cancelled The Long Night or whatever which would have been a good show. Who the fucks making these decisions

God this takes me back to my early twenties when I would sleep with a random chick at her flat. I'd be laying on her mattress that's in the floor and this is how she'd wake up and I'd just watch her.

I miss drinking and tight girlz

The book (and ASOIAF as a whole) is a straight up anti-monarchy tale, which criticizes authoritarianism and outlines the fall of a dynasty that fell for its own hype and spiraled into derangement.

The showrunners seem to support authoritarianism, they are just mad that women can't be placed in that position. So you get a schizophrenic story where "monarchy bad if Aegon" but "monarchy good if Rhaenyra/Alicent."

>If you saw a factory worker jump under a hydraulic press and get crushed to death you certainly wouldn't call it 'a true factory worker's death' or anything like that.
I would actually

I guess they want Daeron to have a scene with another Targ, as we wonโ€™t see him interact with anyone other than the hightowers and the seeds otherwise.
