Jaws popularised shark autism, every shark autist and marine biologist had their interest created by watching Jaws, so no one really shits on it. Dinos have always been a major autist obsession though so there was already a massive community for it to trigger as soon as it came out.

Why was the spino in the middle of the forest? If they encountered it near the shore that would make sense.
It shouldn't be in the middle of the forest where it would compete with another apex predator for resources.

>*CRACK*
This moment, more than any other, marked the high point of the Jurassic Park/World series. Even the iconic brachiosaurus reveal or the T-rex attack in the original pale in comparison to this moment. While those scenes were ground breaking, this did more than amaze audiences with good special effects, this proved that even the greatest legends of cinema could be overtaken by something even more splendid.

Unironically, this momemt and everything leading up to it is an utter milestone in film history and should be studied as a prime example of how to do expectation subversion CORRECTLY, as opposed to how so many terrible films do today.

Because JP3 was a blatant king kong tier monster movie on purpose and the spino was the michael myers of the island. That's why they have the scene with Grant giving the conference at the start, where he basically looks at the audience and goes, "NOW THESE ARE NOT ACTUALLY REAL DINOSAURS, YOU MUST REMEMBER... THEY'RE MUTANTS AND DON'T BEHAVE LIKE REAL DINOSAURS!"

If you are not aware, the Spinosaurus debate has become one of the most heated debates in modern paleontology.

Starting in the 2010's and still going to this very day, a series of papers have been published leading to the creation of 2 hypothesis that are dividing the paleontology world (or more specifically the Spino nerds which are a specific kind of paleonerds that often get bullied by other people in the field)

Its not really debated now a days that the Spino was a bipedal animal (cope and seethe quadrupedal-cels), and that he was a semi aquatic predator, but here is where the war begins.

Hypothesis A
The Spinosaurus was a heron like hunter, meaning that it stuck to shallow waters and the shore lines of lakes and rivers and it would catch its pray by using his head to poke underwater, again, like modern day herons. It did not have the capacity to dive, it was not good swimmer and its massive tail was used for attracting a mate.

Hypothesis B
The Spinosaurus did NOT hunt like a heron. The spino had the capacity to fully dive and chase its prey underwater. It was a great swimmer and its massive tail was used much like we see in modern crocodiles. (this still in rivers and lakes, sorry but ocean Spinosaurus aren't real)

>Hmmm anon what if it used both ways of hunting? What if it was capable of diving and chasing underwater but it sometimes also hunted like a heron?
kill yourself, this is not a position any respected person in the field (currently) defends, stop being a centrist and pick your side, the papers published since the 2010's directly contradict each other, there is currently no room for both hypothesis to coexist.

(and no a Spino could not snap a T-Rex's neck like in Jurassic Park 3, its jaw was literally not built for that)

Now that you are aware of this make sure to check once in a while on the current state of this debate because one side will come out on top and the other will be absolutely humiliated

You donโ€™t mention the most important part, which is that Spino has been and still is highly fragmentary. Itโ€™s changed so much because of key finds that ends certain recreations of what it might look like. Recently they found more jaw and spine which changed it again.
A notable unresolved absence is the front limbs which will be critical to saying how it moved around on land or in water.

What I don't understand about the whole debate is that why is it every relative of Spinosaurus falls under hypothesis A, but it's Spinosaurus itself they can't make their minds up on?
Personally I think they have some capacity for swimming, but not to primarily hunt.

this is true
I think people have this idea that a lot of paleontology is guesswork and underestimate how much you can learn from a creature by just a few bones (especially teeth, also our understanding of the spinosaurus is also aided by other members of the spinosauridae family that have more complete fossils) but at the same time it is true that there is a lot of room for our understanding of the spino to change as it has in the past, which is part of what makes following this dinosaur so entertaining
>>212787292
because of things like its tail, its bone density and its buoyancy levels, these are all things cited in papers by people that support hypothesis B, it seems like the spino had unique characteristics that could enable it to be more aquatic to the point of diving and chasing prey underwater
of course people that support hypothesis A also cite things like the tail, the sail, bone density and buoyancy levels to argue that it could NOT dive underwater

both hypothesis look at the same things but arrive at totally different conclusions which is what has made this recent back and forward so interesting

It wouldn't have had its neck in that position to begin with.
Most if not all evidence shows the T-Rex had one of the most powerful bite strengths ever.
Crocs are around 4-5000 psi
Great white 4000 psi
Polar bear 1200 psi
Grizzly 950 psi

Trex is estimated to have between 8000 - 12000 psi
Which would have been more than enough for this bite to end the fight right there.
It has plenty of time to get a proper bite and crush its neck, which is what would have happened given that force is easily enough to crush bone and wind pipe.

I really don't understand people getting off on "owning the trex fans"
Spinosaurus was pushed hard as the new mascot and it flopped, given mary sue plot armor just to be different.
