Snyder's effort was to show Superman as a human being first. This person who's just a guy and thus doesn't know all the answers nor isn't perfect. He can't be at two places at the same time, he can't save everyone, and he is bound to make mistakes.
The problem is that everyone created this image of him in their heads even without knowing him and are making a mess out of things. They see what they want to see.
Snyder's Superman is the most human and flawed Superman there could be.

The problem here are the random lines. They are there to mimic the muscle areas and fit better on a muscled body. So if you're going to add those awful, distracting lines you might as well have the costume fit the actor's body and be tight enough.

Now if you wanted a looser costume, why not just go with simple cloth and have it be loose on the actor's body? It would have worked so much better visually. It would give this simple and chill vibe.

But having such a manufactured looking costume full of those professional texture and those lines meant to better fit an athlete's body, and make it all baggy and loose just creates this visual clash that tells your eyes that something is off. Like a cosplayer buying a brand-designed cosplay from Amazon that just doesn't fit the cosplayer's body the same way it did the actual actor's body in the movie.

That's called having a moment of doubt or personal crisis, and it always ends with Clark doing some soul searching and rising above it. It's just that in the Snyder's movies Superman is more affected by things, as a realistic person, and the situation is allowed to play itself.

And the whole thing with Darkseid was to build upon the idea of free will vs mind control/no will. This goes back to MoS and Zod.
Darkseid wants to control everyone and everything. He wants to strip people of their free will and turn them into automatons. He preys on emotional weakness and trauma. Superman would be a victim in a moment of vulnerability, but then would be helped to regain his will and would then fight the representation of oppression and control as the champion of free will.

That was essentially Snyder's thesis on American and its greatest virtue: freedom.
