It was thanks to the great depression. People needed cheaper snacks and popcorn was extremely cheap. IIRC they started serving it in movie theaters because it was making them more money than the actual movie tickets were. They actually kept the prices on tickets lower just so they could get more people in the theaters to sell them popcorn. So it became a cheap staple of the theater experience
