Tron comes to the real world, dude.

It looks much more generic and less well produced than the previous film. But they both have the same problem to me. The original film took an extemely bold leap in how it chose to display the world. It still remains one of the most unqiue looking films in cinema history (without hyperbole). Both new entries simply spit and polish that aesthetic. They don't push any boundaries in how to depict themselves. They miss the central legacy of the material and don't build on what came before. As a throwaway idea (and possibly a bad one), would be, since this film namechecks AI, would have been too utilize A.I. image making to build a new aesthetic. SOMETHING new, at any rate, that really cements the film as something unlike anything else. The previous entry could have attempted photo-real motion capture for the entire world. This one, under the conceit of bringing digital creations into reality, could have attempted to use models etc for everything rather than CGI. I don't actually know, but the complete lack of ambition seems indicative of post 2000's hollywood.

All the appeal of the original was in the fact that it was set in a virtual world at a time when technology and computers made people dream about the future. Short Answer: yes

Long Answer:

First Tron movie was a classic, hands-down... CGI was literally in its infancy, which adds to the charm of it's 80s aesthetic. Not to mention seeing Bridges performance as a slacker-hippie prodigy, which evolves in his later films like "Big Lebowski".

Tron Legacy, was 'good' for the most part. Fans of the first movie will find every excuse to defend this flawed film, but the flaws are too many. Sterile environment, rehashed story of the first, uncanny-valley of rubber-face young Flynn.... Still was a good entertaining movie, but....

looks like a lot of cgi of city scapes, not that legacy wasn't a bunch of that .. but there was some sort of mood.

The story was borderline nonsensical in the first but the visuals were pure art. Legacy was no big deal, they didn't experiment or take risks. It was also full of ugly volumetrics that didn't belong in a digital world, if I had to describe that movie it would be "dim" or "glazed", Tron was vivid. I find the premise about them 3d-printing the soldiers, to be a combination of being just totally not what Tron was about, and a little too easy for a plot of things going wrong. The Tron programs were always common apps. Spreadsheets and word processors. So, suddenly war machines? And there war machines going bad is just a bit too obvious and easy. Everyone knows it will go wrong before they do it, so no new ground is being explored.

To be fair, the previous films show some programs are trained to be guards or gladiators more or less so that doesn't seem like a huge stretch to me.

I haven't followed the plot of this one that closely yet so idk how long the humans have known about the programs or migrated them to the real world knowingly. Presumably it's newish territory and they see themselves as having full control over Ares who as far as they know is a complete golem by design.
