Only the wall of police father photos from the trailers got a smile from me. The hand with a coffee cup in a moving car gag was good on paper but wasn't filmed very well (the background is blurry so you can barely see the joke while the OG movies would've had it be obvious).

I watched Fatal Instinct last weekend. Not a bad movie, fairly funny, maybe not as funny as Naked Gun but pretty close. It's better if you're a fan of neo-noir and those early 90s erotic thrillers. I laughed when the main dude is tailing the femme fatale in his car and inside his car he has venetian blinds and a ceiling fan.

The actual reason is, that Police Squad is a show that benefits from multiple viewings because of the sheer count of all the gags going on in the background as well as on the foregound. It was never a show that was meant for live TV and when it came out, there still wasn't a convinient way for the audiences to return to an episode.
It wasn's as much as too sophisticated, but too ahead of its time in a way it should be watched to be fully enjoyed.

>the liam neeson one?
I don't know. I watched the trailer. Looked like it had a few good gags. Its hard to convey the humor of the Naked Gun in a trailer since a lot of the humor comes from the constant random sight gag chaos in the background or the comedy of errors scenes where everything just progressively goes to shit. That's the key to the series, if its just walking from one gag to the next without the random chaos in between or setting up scenes where the gags all lead into each other as anarchy takes over then its not gonna work.
I like Neeson though and I think he can pull of comedy even if he lacks Liam Neeson's absolute mastery of deadpan delivery and his endearingly goofy expressions. I'll give it a chance, I honestly hope it doesn't suck.

I showed her The Piano Teacher, Chinatown, Love Liza, Branded to Kill, Come and See, Cronenberg's Crash, Mulholland Drive and a lot more. She loved every single one.

leslie nielsen was the glue that held it all together, you can't even look at the guy without laughing whatever he does in a scene. liam neeson has been in so many films i've seen but i don't think i've once laughed at something he's read.

I feel like making fun of action movies is harder these days, because many of them can grace the absurd.
John Wick is special because all the stunt work is done in a way that it makes you believe that what they are doing is credible, but it still has silly stuff like John Falling down all those stairs or down a building crashing into multiple things or getting shot multiple times or the subway silencer scene, (which by the way was inspired by the fact that when inspecting locations one of the crew people fell and people just walked around/over him and ignored him)

Naked Gun was spoofing a lot of cliches from midcentury TV shows (like the stoolie or how they made cheapo gunfights) so I wondered if the Liam Neeson one will use Law and Order type shit that has been everywhere since the '90s as the basis for jokes. But from the stuff they've shown I haven't seen anything like that.

Comedy and parody films in general are dead. It's partially because popular culture moves so fast that anything you try to parody is old news. Also writers are abysmal these days and you can't make jokes about anything/anyone since someone on twitter will get angry about it. It's also impossible to make any sort of absurd comedy that's on par with freaking real life with Trump being president and all that insanity.

I agree with you here, I also think that parody is very hard to do in a culture where we keep rebooting things endlessly and notalgiabaiting people. How is there room for parodying a genre when we never move on from it? Parody generally works best when it is towards the end of a genre/niche's lifespan, but when we are keeping everything on eternal life support, there is no natural cycle of sincerity and comedic self awareness.
Also, it's hard to parody Superman when the actual Superman movie that has come out is borderline parodying itself. Modern pop culture is already so meta that it makes parody redundant.

Airplane is a great movie, but it really suffered from the years passing by. It simply got old, same thing happened to many great comedies like Frankenstein Junior and many other mel brooks classics.
Naked Gun is simply the GOAT of comedies. You simply can't top it, the jokes in there will always be funny, now, then and 50 years from now.
