I feel like the problem with both sequels (even though the 3rd isn't out yet but I can grasp where it's going) is that it works on a very small conflictuous scale. The first one felt like a real movie, it was triumphant and the stakes were always all or nothing. The latter movies attempt to replicate that same importance on a microcosm. It's no longer a winner takes all situation, it's more of a personal vendetta story with a bigger threat looming in the background, which still matters in the grand scheme, but not in the movies themselves, as much. This downsizing of scale, no matter how many joyride sequences the sequels have, feels somewhat empty. There was a clear shift from hollywood pretense in the original, to an episodic, television-like framing.
