Kimmel is a halfway decent late night show but I wish it was more competitive. Colbert is boring and I would never watch it, even on a night with good guests, but Fallon is so cloying and braindead that it's instantly embarrassing to watch.


Late night is a good format. It's good tv. But Colbert and Fallon being uniquely terribly and uniquely boring, respectively, it hasn't made Kimmel's show any better. Just by comparison. Anyway I don't believe that late night is ending at CBS, but they'll instead try a new format and give the name a little twist.

Add in the costs of the studio, writers, band, etc. and it gets hard to justify in today's market. Especially when you consider this is not content people go back to watch. In 2025, Colbert's show was pulling in a little over 2 million viewers an episode. >90% of which were over the age of 50.

They could replace him with a nobody (who'd draw worse viewers) but that's just putting the inevitable off for a few years. There is no future in this genre on linear. It's been replaced by podcasts people make in their homes for almost everyone under the age of 50.

Besides, there's so much to watch now a days with Netflix, other streaming services and youtube that it feels like late night TV is becoming obsolete unless you're a midlife crisisfag or a retirement homefag.
