Late night is a good format. It's good tv. But Colbert and Fallon being uniquely terribly and uniquely boring, respectively, it hasn't made Kimmel's show any better. Just by comparison. Add in the costs of the studio, writers, band, etc. and it gets hard to justify in today's market. Especially when you consider this is not content people go back to watch. In 2025, Colbert's show was pulling in a little over 2 million viewers an episode. >90% of which were over the age of 50.

They could replace him with a nobody (who'd draw worse viewers) but that's just putting the inevitable off for a few years. There is no future in this genre on linear. It's been replaced by podcasts people make in their homes for almost everyone under the age of 50.
