Hunter was never a serious contender. They were likely some kind of forced psy-op, made to trick people into eventually accepting Zelda, a female, as the main protagonist of the movie, and not Link, the original protagonist of the franchise. Link being replaced by Zelda as the main protagonist should be the real controversy. But instead they managed to make it all about Hunter. It's a trick.
