Colbert made a joke out of being 'conservative'. Though he wasn't conservative, he did such a good job faking it that he accidently became one of the better spokesmen for the right-leaning crowd. This gave him some popularity with them; also granting Colbert a limited amount of freedom to also joke about the right. But without the cover of being a fake conservative, he winds up being another Phil Donahue; which the audience has evolved past decades ago.
