So many reasons op. Back then people lived to maybe 45, most of his important staff had probably spent most of their life on campaign at that point. And for what? They never saw thier families, never got to enjoy the wealth they'd picked up and the friends they had that didn't die in battle they probably lost to diseases and exposure on the march. Like they said in the movie they were tired and also im sure India was pretty fucking bleak back then too. So the "prize" was absolutely not worth it.
