The Xenomorph is one of the few cases where it's more chilling that it's not a skull-face. Covering the design with a visor but leaving it only just visible was ballsy but the linchpin of the final design.
Did Giger actually design it that way or did someone get involved?

wew, I forgot how bad this was. Actually, I forgot it existed until I decided to watch all the Predator movies.
The cast is full of well known actors but there's ZERO chemistry between them, it takes place on Halloween (lots of kids around, but they're never in danger), and the lighting makes it look like an episode of Modern Family.
Also, the poster is similar to that one interracial meme.

visually speaking, lossless 480p is better to view than lossy 1080p. download a 4k upload, run it through handbrake at 480p, and set the constant quality/RF to 0. you will be very pleased with the results.

I watched hellraiser for the first time. Special effects were pretty good. I thought it was a slasher film before I watched it, so was interesting to find out it wasn't. Reminded me of From Beyond (which i prefer to this). Editing and acting were shit but that's about what I expected. The ending sucked though

The NECA Big Chap figure is easily the best sculpted Big Chap you can get, especially for the price. It's just a shame that NECA's stuff is so fragile and it's a 50/50 shot as to whether it's going to be broken coming straight out the box and that the paint can be pretty sloppy sometimes. That's why I never "upgraded" from the very pre-posed first version they did.
Picrel is the 1/4 scale version, but it's the same sculpt.

Prometheus in hindsight... Ridley was right. Alien needed new mythos. If anything it was too strongly tied to the Alien universe.

The weird thing about that moment is that the intention was that you can see the Predator's true for through the reflection in the puddle in the alley. Like that water negated the light-bending effect of the cloak, but the Predator fades into view when the camera tilts down (it also dissolves between two different Predator shots, one where he's standing and a second where he's easing into a crouch), which gives the impression that the cloak is just turning off, only to be working again in the next shot. It's a neat idea, and definitely one they should bring back now that it's easier to do the cloak effect, but it's just weirdly executed in the film.

Saw the new I Know What You Did Last Summer. Tried so hard to be like the new Scream legacy sequels but didn't work at all. Nothing felt earned, killer reveal was lame. A couple good kills and I always dug the look of the Fisherman but there isn't enough there to justify a sequel like this or tease another.
Cline's character was the only even remotely enjoyable new character because she was basically SMG's characer 2.0, everyone else's dialogue and writing was atrocious.

That's definitely an impressive trick, but I was more referring to the specific optical compositing process of doing the Predator cloak which produced varying levels of quality each time the shot was done. But in that alleyway scene, it is so perfectly clear and crisp.

Yeah don't worry I get you. It's also one of those effects where I have no idea how they do it which is cool. You know a lot of practical effects you can get an obvious idea.
Sidenote: There's also something warm about those older hand drawn lightning effects you see from films from that era.

I adore the ingenuity of older effects companies, so while I have no problem with CGI being used where appropriate, it being the go-to solution for so many films now that it has killed a lot of really smart techniques, especially ones that are very format specific like this for example.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y15uRLNC7kQ
Spoiler for those who don't want to know the trick.
The make-up applied to the actress was a very strong colour (red if I recall correctly) and a coloured lens the same shade as the make-up was placed in front of the camera. When she transforms the lens was removed causing the make-up effect to become visible to the camera.
This technique is only really possible for black and white films, but it works so damn well and is in-camera, which means it will look as good today as it did then and will in another 100 years.

>Giger became involved with The Tourist, an early-1980s sci-fi project which began as a script by writer Clair Noto. In development at Universal and later Francis Ford Coppolaβs production company American Zoetrope, The Tourist was a surreal sci-fi drama about a young executive who also happens to be a shapeshifting alien. Giger produced some extraordinary imagery for it, but the film gradually sank among script rewrites, contractual issues, and a lot of bad blood among those involved.

>Next came a potential second collaboration with Alien director Ridley Scott β a sci-fi thriller called Dead Reckoning. A project that coalesced around the year 1988 [...]. Set in a future Los Angeles on the brink of ecological collapse, it was about a genetically-engineered monster causing havoc on a moving train. The film never happened, though some of Gigerβs ideas wound up in 1995βs Species, including an oddly out-of-place nightmare sequence in which a young Michelle Williams is glimpsed running from a bio-mechanical ghost train. That came straight from Gigerβs work on Dead Reckoning, and Giger reportedly sank $100,000 of his own money into making the killer train in his studio.

>The Mirror: Described as βAlice Through The Looking Glass meets HP Lovecraft,β Maloneβs script was about a department store worker who finds an old mirror in an antiques shop. βWhat she doesnβt realise is itβs stolen from an archaeological dig, and there are a number of people trying to look for it,β Malone tells us. Nor does the protagonist realise that the mirror is also a portal to another dimension.
>βIn that dimension, machines rule and not humans. They were created by humans, but humans have long since died out β [the machines] probably killed them. This takes place millions of years into the future in their world anyway. Theyβre trying to recreate humanity, so theyβre stealing people and taking them back to that world. They take the woman who gets the mirror about halfway through the film.β

>In the wake of The Mirror, Malone embarked on another project: a space horror called Dead Star. As Giger once noted, its concept was essentially βHellraiser in spaceβ: in the 23rd century, a space expedition to a planet called Daveros leads to the discovery of an ancient alien artefact. The object, dubbed the Shard, turns out to be capable of opening a portal into another dimension (much like The Mirror, in fact), and from it emerges the Devil itself.
>βYou could basically go to Hell β Hell was a real place and you could go there through this Shard,β Malone explains. βIn a way it was a spin on the Australian film, Dead Calm. Dead Calm set in space. This guy shows up on the research vehicle with this device and all hell breaks loose β literally.β
kek that Hellraiser in space happened but this film didn't.

People that post this shit about Giger (it's pronounced "Gee-ger") clearly aren't familiar with the man beyond his art. The stuff Giger painted came from his nightmares, which he put into art in an attempt to get the visions OUT of his head, and when he wasn't doing that he was doing drugs to try and find relief from the nightmares. Giger may have understood, and to an extent appreciated the beauty in the horrors that he painted, but he most definitely did not enjoy them or get off to them.
