I think the problem is that he can't do jokes straight-faced. Everyone in his films knows it's a farce and acts as such, but the majority of the humour of Dredd works because Judge Dredd is a straight man who is completely serious all the time, no matter the silliness of the situation

I don't understand why they keep trying to force Waititi as a big pop culture director. The guy obviously has no interest in or passion for these big Western IPs, so of course the end result sucks, he doesn't care. His NZ movies where you can tell he actually wants to make them, they're not bad.

I just can't see him doing it. Dredd is basically Robocop + Fifth Element. Can he do the fifth element stuff? Sure. Can he do the mean and nasty satirical stuff of Robocop? We've never seen it. He's done some very funny stuff, but it always had pathos. It wasn't violent or snarky.

As someone from New Zealand, it's kind of wild that a Maori of all people became one of the most well known Hollywood directors.
Apart from Edmund Hillary, he's probably the most notable person from this country, and comes the poorest demographic in this country which is pretty crazy.

Dredd was always just an authoritarian cunt, his stories were almost always more about the world he inhabited than the man himself. That's why it would be just far too expensive to portray that world in a movie. 2012 was a great movie but it was essentially a bottle episode in movie form, you can't keep doing that.
