Why do we not have any futurism in the 2020s like the culture did back in the 80s? are the decades forward really that bleak?

Flying cars make some sense for first responders to have, so they can hop over traffic. But that would mean a lot more training on using the things.

If we get to the point that self driving isn't rife with bugs and bad tech (lol Tesla not having LiDAR) then maybe we can move from 2D to 3D and have self-flying autopilot figured out. I know autopilot in planes is pretty good, but they're not navigating flying between skyscrapers and support pillars. Then we wouldn't end up with Wiggum flying his car into a skyscraper and melting the steel beams.

Of course the power and thrust necessary are a bit of an issue, as well as VTOL just being more dangerous than traditional takeoff and landing. Looking at you, V-22.

I thought about this recently. The 20th Century saw ENORMOUS and rapid scirntific and engineering progress. So there was a huge focus on futurism. Seemingly based on that people keeped expecting a similar trajectory. However in the mid 90s giant progress stopped and for the last quarter century we have just seen iterations. A lot of futurism in this period seems to reflect that. Something like Her, which had ear buds and chatbots. People aren't seeing any progress in real life and thus aren't projecting any in fiction.

I've never heard that before, I do immediately like that idea.
The only vaguely possible mass use of flying cars would be the opposite of freedom. Where you have 0 manual control of the vehicle even in an emergency. It's just not feasible any other way, it would be a disaster.
There is still plenty of space on this planet to build and drive around on

Flying cars do make sense but they will NEVER look like car shapes with little puffs of smoke coming out the bottom as in blade runner. That was the retarded thing. They're already near to making flying taxies be a thing in big cities. They're electric with many rotors like a giant drone. Far cheaper and easier than a helicopter, and can get people from the airport to a hotel or their business much faster than sitting in jam packed ground traffic.

As an example. In the space of about 60 years we went from people getting into the air in crude flying machines to putting a man on the moon. In the subsequent 60 years we can't even return a man to the moon. We do have endless announcements of how "diverse" the crew would be, if we did. In the space of about 30 years we went from splitting the atom to building city powering nuclear power stations. Now the U.S. government is looking at plans for how to build small nuclear grids because they no longer possess the ability to build large scale engineering projects.

Investors own it and put CEOs in charge who make a lot of money

Replacing manual labor with Ai would mean physically running robots with a lot of mechanical parts (each part can break down and wear out)
Replace management and you just need a computer screen

There is literally zero reason to put men back on the moon. Or even Mars. There's nothing there. It exponentially increases the risk, cost, complexity, etc of the mission. They can and do land drones there regularly which is all that's needed. Put that money instead towards a fleet of drones with AI workers that will assemble a moonbase so that it's all set up and ready for any future astronaut inhabitants. Idiotic to have the humans go down to nothing and have to put it together manually.

Not really, cars are starting to change, with harder angles in their designs and all. I'd say you were right until 2020 or so.
That said, there have been two other major changes: One, adding lots of tech gadgets for shitty stuff. And two, cars are generally a lot flimsier now, more fragile. There are vids of people literally tearing a car to pieces just with their bare hands, without using much force. That wouldn't be possible with a 20+ years old car. Worse than that, it applies to stuff under the hood too.

>Just like how the Industrial Revolution led to massive job losses and doomed humanity?
Well, yes, it's slow but steady. That's exactly what it did.

Fission is a lot safer and more viable.
But it would allow countries to achieve energy independence and certain (people) don't want that.
So there is a massive campaign to hate on nuclear power.

For me, its the men who fire bombed Dresden, a 100% civilian city. They knew what they were doing was wrong but hey as long as the "good guys" win then its a-ok.

uh huh. Dresden was an atrocity but there's no need to lie.

Smartphones made cyberpunk really miss the mark
take blade runner for example, it feels like optimistic space opera now
you have a corporation that actually introduced space mining instead of being a fake glowie media corp
you have androids
actual sexbots
less surveillance
cool cities
great aesthetic

imagine if you did it today, he'd fly next to a giant tranny nigger face on the rainbow ziggurat
i mean he'd pretend to fly but there'd be a tranny nigger face nonetheless
on a blase glass tower

Turns out that the future was way shittier than any of the dystopian authors predicted it would be.
Way more blacks and Indians.

>"wow wtf you can't just bomb our society. war crime??? hello???"
Germany and Japan both deserved worse than they got. if you're going to start a huge war and ruin the decade for everyone, you don't get to bitch and moan when you lose
