I've heard the same things about the Marvels. It was fun and breezy, and Ilhan Omar was a delight! And I've heard similar things about Thunderbolts too, come to think about it.

Even though the ending is them leaving and entering 616 at the end of Thunderbolts? Nice try, nigger.

Thunderbolt did fine with audiences though. It's decent as far as 2020's marvel goes

The movie is self-contained.

It's only an after credit stinger. They've been used to tease future storylines like this since the original Iron Man....
The movie is absolutely self contained. Not that that really matters when it sounds like complete ass.

From the ads on, it's clear they followed this guy's prescription to the letter. Love him or hate him (Star Wars "is a movie about space wizards for children") he gave a plan, and they followed it.

Stop with the Doom-centric. Mention their origins in passing and get on with it, they are established famous people already, who went on big sci-fi adventures (not comic book! More Guardians than Avengers or Superman) and are a family that loves each other.

They literally formed the trailers about these ideas.

I hope Patrick got a 7 figure check out of it.

I am a bitter, bitter ocean of bitterness about the last movie with [fill in name of MCU character/franchise here] and so I want this to underperform just so Marvel can go into Avengers: Doomsday with an entire cast whose last film underperformed + Downey not [sort of] playing the character people want to see him play.

I don't usually accuse people of being Marvel shills but there's a particular type of commenter on Twitter and elsewhere who simply tries to pretend that Doomsday has a great cast when almost everyone announced is unpopular or damaged goods. I would enjoy seeing them try to spin it if nobody is coming off a popular movie.

The fact that Thunderbolts got almost universal praise blows my fucking mind. I am unironically a fan of the comics so was actually looking forward to the movie despite the changes to the line-up and story in general but nothing fucking happened and then the movie ended. They even managed to fuck Sentry up.

They had the exact setup that led to the original Thunderbolts comic, too. Cataclysmic event shakes the world to its core, many of the great heroes are gone, everyone is looking for something to believe in, perfect time for a new hero team.

Yes, they probably couldn't have pulled off the exact "villains pretend to be heroes" plot and they probably told themselves that the premise they came up with was close enough. But it wasn't, it wasn't even a premise. The interesting thing about Thunderbolts is watching criminals try to be heroes, and this wasn't anything.

It underperformed. Not bad enough to consider it a flop, not good enough to consider it a hit so both sides have plenty of ammo to flame each other. Internationally it bombed. Domestically he did similar numbers to Man of Steel without adjusting for inflation. Man of Steel was released over 10 years ago but inflation doesn't exist so it's not a big deal. And even if inflation does exist it's irrelevant. And even if inflation is relevant Superman 25 is still a box office hit. And even if it isn't a hit Gunn isn't going anywhere so seethe and cope Snyderchud. See you in a year after Superwhore and Clayface bomb.
