This Laura Dern's grimace is the scariest moment in Blue Velvet and also scarier that the Inland Empire jumpscares.

I wonder how the subtitles will be on the new release. The updated subs for The Killer suck, removing “mickey mouse” and “donald duck” as their codenames is unforgivable. Same goes for Chungking Express changing “love you 1,000 years” to “undying love”.
I really could care less if the new subs are more accurate. Something of the films history is in the goofyness of these translations.

I think the version of Puce Moment I saw is with the soundtrack you’re referring to. I’ve seen both versions of Rabbits Moon and preferred the earlier one. Really though I’m ambivalent. I appreciate the movies, particularly Fireworks, but I don’t think of them much. I know Anger was a big Eisenstein fan which is would make sense because he’s another director I appreciate but ultimately feel indifferent about. I read his books, watched his movies, got a bit out of it, and moved on.
However, Anger did say in an interview before he died he had made a movie dedicated to Elliot Smith. I would like to see that.

I like his earlier dreamy stuff: Fireworks, Rabbit's Moon and Eaux d'artifice, they really do feel like dreams, which is actually a very hard thing for a film to achieve. Lucifer Rising is also very good. But i'm kind of with you, most of his stuff doesn't make too much of a deep impact on me. There's also too much occult symbolism which to me is meaningless since i'm not well versed.

He comes up frequently in Jonas Mekas’ diary. Mekas hosted the screenings of Lantern Cycle in NYC which brought Anger’s work to a bigger audience. I think he’s very talented, but ultimately he comes off as a shut in cinephile. Lived with Langlois for a while to make a movie in the 60s and nothing was ever finished. His work is worth seeing, but it feel inert.
I think of Warhols movies, kind of the opposite. Anger is sensory and concise, and Warhols films are messy and full of friction. But ultimately I prefer Wahol’s movies. Anger was very into the occult and Warhol was very catholic. Maybe this also plays into what interested them about filmmaking.
