Just watched this after having it sit on my drive for years. Why tf was this movie so praised and has such a high rating? I understand critic rating, since nobody would dare give it a bad score, but user rating too. Definitely not a kineaux experience and have no idea what so many people saw in it? My working theory is that people managed to recognize the hamfisted metaphor and felt smart watching it.

It was cool how the main character Wickus killed all his enemies like a cool terrorist, blowing up buildings, killing ZOGbot mercenaries, killing the dumb african jig gangsters, and all for selfish reasons like getting his old life back. Christopher the Prawn was also cool and his son was cute. The movie is redpilled in a certain way. The Prawns are supposed to be like black people and most of them are retarded but a small handful of them (Christopher, his son, and to some extent Christopherโ€™s friend) are smarter than the rest. The movie ends with the implication that Christopher will come back to free his people and change Wickus back to human form. But realistically, Christopher never came back and probably never will.

You had unrealistically high expectations because you spend too much time consuming discussion of media properties and placing value in opinions of strangers

Its praised because it has a good and unique story, with amazing practical effects and cgi.

Aliens are stranded on earth because their mothership malfunctioned, they are pretty dumb and have lost their leader, they are not here for an invasion of earth and the ship is over Johannesburg and not some american city all of which is very refreshing when it comes to scifi story telling.

The main character who is an average corporate jackey who thinks he is doing something "good" and at his work, is also just a tool for the real projects, harvesting the advanced alien technology of course.

When he fucks up with some alien biotech that slowly turns him into "one of them", and becomes a possible billion dollar advancement in technology, he realizes how replaceable he is even though his father-in-law is one of the head guys of the company, they are gonna harvest him like a fucking lab-rat. He tries to get the help from a "smart alien" who has been trying to escape and get help, while he slowly physically turns into a "prawn" he ironically becomes more and more human.

The effects, the alien technology, especially the weapons feel truly organic and powerful and the semi documentary filming also adds to the movie as you follow the main characters journey.

Yes, it is obvious that the movie being set in South africa is portraying apartheid and segregation and so forth but I like it for the scifi movie it is, its my favorite.

No idea. Saw it opening night and it was an extremely mixed bag. That wasn't even an outside opinion. Most people dismissed the criticism as it being disappointment bred by reaction to the enormous pre-release hype. But all of the issues it had would be reflected in Neils subsequent films that were varying degrees of failure.

Well the idea is that these aliens have already been on earth for a long long time, to the point where aliens aren't even a big shock anymore; they're fucking mundane. So the whole need for hazmat suits and standard operating procedures went out the window for these guys because they're just trying to seize and evacuate these motherfuckers as fast as humanly possible. The official word of god as for what that black goo is that it's a biotech "repairing" fluid that was needed to finally get the ship working again, and I guess that tiny little vial was super potent because Christopher straight up says it took him like 10 years to salvage it. But regardless, when it sprays on Wikus's face, it "repairs" his dying cells with Prawn DNA instead of Human DNA, because the biotech "assumes" the Human DNA is incorrect, which is why he slowly turns into one of them.

A sequel would be lame as fuck and Blomkamp's every film since has been worse than District 9. Also for as much love as the prawn look gets what really sells them to me is the way they move, you can see their jittery insectoid way of examining things and in particular scenes with the kid which puts even stuff like Starship Troopers to shame. They move like crickets with this stilted but quick motion

I like how they made it a point to show just how experienced and skilled he was on the terminal. Like, in a foreign planet with all this decrepit technology that he has to salvage, he's just another unassuming prawn, but put him behind the terminal of a ship, and he'll show you just who exactly he used to be. It really demonstrates the idea that this is one impressive motherfucker compared to all the other prawns that just sort of muck about all day.
