Revolutionary Edition (Slight Return)

Fact of the Day
>Wiazemsky and Bresson developed a close relationship during the shooting of the film [Au Hasard Balthazar], although it was not consummated. On location they stayed in adjoining rooms and Wiazemsky said that "at first, he would content himself by holding my arm, or stroking my cheek. But then came the disagreeable moment when he would try to kiss me... I would push him away and he wouldn't insist, but he looked so unhappy that I always felt guilty." Later Wiazemsky lost her virginity to a member of the film's crew, which she says gave her the courage to reject Bresson as a lover.
Question of the Day
>What are your favorite stories of interpersonal set drama and behind-the-scenes conflicts in the history cinéma?

QOTD
>The renowned filmmaker Adolfo Aristarain presented his book "El oficio del cine" at an event in which he reviewed his career and his experience working with the Italian director Sergio Leone, whom he considered "a hack" and whom he "lost respect to" and with the actor Charles Bronson, whom he defined as "the biggest son of a bitch in the world."
>I got along badly with Leone, I don't like his cinema a bit. [...] Meanwhile, dealing with Bronson during filming was not positive either: "The first five days everything went well because he had not arrived. But when he arrived... Bronson was born and set out to be the biggest son of a bitch in the world. There are guys who can have something to come out of their inside and be sons of bitches, but Bronson's was very premeditated."
>I lost respect for Leone because of the things Bronson did to screw up the three assistant directors and because one day, when he saw that the camera was on the floor in a corner, the actor said: "the camera doesn't go there; when they change it, call me" and left. And Leone changed the place of the camera. That's when I said: "this man is a hack". Because if you know where you put the camera and why you want it there, explain it to him, but don't change because the guy asks you to,"

Godard was in a pretty emotionally unstable state at this point. His marriage to Karina had finally ended after two miscarriages and multiple suicide attempts from Anna, the first being after Vivre sa Vie which she said made her look ugly. Wiazemsky was ten years Godard’s junior and a college student. Godard’s friendships with people in the Cahier circles were also deteriorating and he started spending a lot of time with Wiazemskys classmates which is the basis for La Chinoise.
This is all to say I don’t think his suicide attempts are so much about her, but more that he was in a period of turmoil and was probably feeling very self loathing. Thankfull he befriended Gorin and that cheered him up.. until he got in a motorcycle accident and was in the er for like 4 months.
But around then he met his third wife and things seemed to even out.

I did not find this movie funny. It wasn't edgy enough to be a good raunchy comedy like The Jerk, the characters and the setting weren't developed enough for it to be an efffective midcentury satire in the vein of a John Waters or Joe Dante movie, it wasn't silly or lighthearted enough to be a goofy romp like Blues Brothers, and it wasn't fast-paced or loose enough to be like a Zuckers movie or a French comedy. It's just sort of stuck trying to be everything all at once and doesn't really succeed imo. I found parodies of it in other movies and shows to be funnier than the actual jokes, which didn't really land for me. At least there were a lot of nice tits and hot girls I guess.
Also obligatory, Boomers are fucking psychopaths. I'm not surprised they all went "literally me" with this movie, but at the same time I'm kind of disgusted by that fact given these characters are all irredeemable pieces of shit but aren't charismatic, charming, or interesting people at all. They're just a bunch of degenerate retards fucking shit up for everyone else in this school and town as a cope for them being too retarded to function.

>What did the boomers do to be psychophants?
Psychopath, not psychophant.
And basically, this movie is a great example.
>protagonists are a bunch of frat guys at some college town university
>they're universally detested by everyone in the town because all they do is drink and prank, annoy, or outright attack everyone else outside of their clique
>university hates them because all they do is cheat on their tests and somehow still fuck up and get the lowest grades of any frat
>nothing in the film explains why these guys act this way or develop these characters at all, they're all just different stripes of abrasive asshole, presumably well-off given they're college students
>one of them lies about being the ex of a deceased girls school student to fuck her roomate
>one of them knocks up a 13 y/o with zero remorse and this is played for laughs
>at the end of the movie they literally destroy the entire town because they were evicted and their frat was condemned for being a bunch of retards who committed several felonies while also flunking and cheating
>movie depicts them as heroes despite showing all of them to be a bunch of malevolent, psychopathic lizardbrains who feel no remorse towards any of their actions
>even the comically exaggerated, John Waters-esque villains like the dean, the jocks, or the JROTC guys come off as significantly better people than them

The thing is, there's plenty of coked up or stoned comedies in this vein from that time I love. Stuff like Up In Smoke, The Jerk, RIchard Pryor's filmography, Trading Places, Kentucky Fried Movie, etc. It just doesn't work at all in this film, especially with the weirdly mean-spirited tone of the thing.

Sounds unironically hilarious, and I'm not even baiting.
What can I say, reality is kinda like that. You know, comedy these days is just about bullies abusing other people then saying "it's a prank bro" if someone gets upset, and I guess back then it might have been more of the same. I think the hilariousness of old school comedies in this style is that the chaos becomes so much that it ends up being absurd.

>What can I say, reality is kinda like that.
The issue I have is that these characters are all depicted as heroes for doing all this awful stuff, while for whatever reason everybody else is the problem. It just has this bizarre, mean-spirited, very feminine victim blaming tone that I can't stand. If it were more silly like Revenge of the Nerds, more developed as a sharp satire like a Waters movie, or more of a Milos Forman or Zuckers type dark comedy, it would've been more effective. But it's just a conventional comedy where these guys are always in the right and virtuous despite being objectively evil.

The reason I'm so bothered by it is because I'm usually a massive fan of raunchy, edgy comedies (ffs I was weaned on the shittiest Adam Sandler movies and adored Filthy Frank videos). I've laughed at stuff far more fucked up, dark, or mean-spirited; but Animal House just falls into this extremely uncomfortable uncanny valley for me because it isn't funny or edgy enough for me to laugh at. These characters are just shitty enough for me to deeply hate them, but not shitty enough for me to find them comical.

That's probably the crux of the issue given I'm a religious Catholic.
If I wanted to see a bunch of niggerbrained, mouse utopia-tier idiots harassing random, decent people for the sake of it I could just go outside. Watching a slickly produced movie that works on no other levels other than glorifying that behavior, especially in a quaint small-town setting, just repulses me given I have a hard time identifying with stuff that's just literally evil and works on no other level.

It's too bad the lady in Arrival ended up knowing ahead of time that she would have to inevitably choose to not tell her future husband their child would have a fatal and incurable disease before conceiving her, either because her perception of time amounted to fate or because she knew he wouldn't otherwise and figured he shouldn't benefit from her clairvoyance to have agency over that, and so would inevitably have to divorce her over her passive deceit, and chose that reality over every other possible healthy child from a different egg or sperm combination

This kind of reminds me of how almost everyone who doesn't believe in free will believes it's their fate to bitch endlessly and try to convince everyone else there's no free will

The thing with free will is that, even though it exists, people can get discouraged from using it.
Think of serial killers, why would they want to change and "give a fuck" about morality when usually what makes them into serial killers is a history of prolonged trauma which in turn makes them more receptive to evil, thus making them forsake the ability to choose and programming them to do evil out of pain. It is like that with a lot of people; our lives condition us into being one thing, and so we are (mostly) slaves of our past.

Citizen Kane isn’t a serious movie. it’s a funny movie and the principle actors have good chemistry. It just happens to have good cinematography and good set design, and for that reason its turned into some retarded debate about “is it the best” or “is it shit”. Its just a fucking movie, and you know the best thing about it? It’s short. It tells a long story fast by having concise dialogue and editing.
And that’s it. Nobody needs to blow smoke up its ass, and nobody needs to suck its dick.
The reason you’re boring is because you come into a half decent discussion and shit on a well known film, probably because you think having discerning taste is an inherent personality trait (it’s not), and in the process you are degrading the entire conversation of the thread into a stupid back in forth.
“It’s great.”
“No it sucks. You’re stupid :p”
That’s boring. There are tens of thousands of movies we could talk about and there are tens of thousands more that you will never see before you die. The quest to find the most perfect, most “true” movie is boring.
These threads could be a decent place to find movies you wouldnt have seen otherwise and have a little fun joking about some movies that wouldn’t be able to maintain their own thread.
So how about we just cut the shit, and share a couple words about a movie you think the rest of us might enjoy?

For me it’s the Steel Helmet. I saw it on TCM by chance and had a great time. It’s a war movie but it feels like a fever dream. None of Fullers movies are a favorite, but I like his energy, his drive to find the drama between his actors.

damn you should tell that to the theater owners who lost money screening that turd. give me belle starr anyday

i gave good reasoning on why citizen kane is shit because i fucking hate citizen kane and am sick of people pretending it's decent. nobody who has actually watched a lot of movies from the 30s or 40s thinks citizen kane is good unless they're a pretentious illiterate who only cares about themes or characters. it looks bad, it's paced like shit and has a lot of gimmicky shots. watch gone with the wind and tell me again that citizen kane is good you wiener.
>For me it’s the Steel Helmet. I saw it on TCM by chance and had a great time.
i vaguely remember this and i know it's bad. if you actually want a good movie from the 50s, check out this list
