Yeah, we are back

>Building on Godzilla Minus Oneโ€™s performance, Toho is planning a sequel for as soon as next year, plus a potential sequel to the film Shin Godzilla and a still-untitled Southeast Asia-focused project, Ueda says. With Legendary, itโ€™s also co-producing a second season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters for Apple TV+ for next year.

It would be extremely unusual for them to make a Shin Godzilla sequel, bearing in mind journalists were originally calling Minus One a Shin Godzilla Prequel. Chances are it will be another stupid comic.

Minus One had a couple good scenes but was overall unfun drama schlock. I'm excited for a Shin sequel if Anno has any input on it.

It's very syrupy. The effects work is impressive for the budget. I love Shin Godzilla--and Shin Ultraman and Shin Kamen Rider for that matter--but Minus One's effects are in another class. Surprisingly dull overall movie, though.

I liked it. It's not as strong as Shin Ultraman in my opinion, but it's stylistically interesting and occasionally touching. Great cast too. My biggest issue is that the action is mostly weak. The First/The Next handled the action much better for the most part.

What? Minus 1 made more money and more importantly had way better legs than Shin did. Shin didn't have a harsh dropoff or anything, but Minus 1 had a 5X multiplier from opening weekend in the US despite a limited release.

Imo, I think Shin Godzilla had the best human storyline in any Godzilla movie. Watching the officials scramble, strategize, and adapt as Godzilla evolved. Yeah, not as emotionally invested a Minos one, but I found it really interesting

One of the tail gojipeople survives and goes around consuming radiation(while killing and smashing and doing tiny atomic breaths) and mutating into a new(different from Shin) Godzilla. The scale of the movie would start at human level and grow each minute until the entire screen is Japan, the new Godzilla melts down and Japan is consumed. All debts paid in full.

It was almost like it's own new sub-genre, treating a giant monster (or whatever sci-fi premise) problem as realistically as possible on the human end.

HBO or BBC or Canal Plus could make a really good short series along similar lines. Wouldn't trust a Netflix or Disney to do it.

It's great the first time through, and I still enjoy rewatching it from time to time, but once you know how everything shakes out, the stretch between the laser scene and the final attack is a fucking slog, because it's just them getting set up for said final attack, and it goes on for like 30-40 minutes. The finale is kind of anticlimactic too, because it plays out basically the exact way they planned almost without a hitch.

They could have made it a little more exciting by snatching the nuclear bacteria idea from Biollante, and make it so the coagulant has to hit a certain temperature in order to activate, and G evolves into some faster form, and makes a beeline to the ocean in order to cool down like he did at the beginning, and if he does, the whole thing starts over again, so it turns into a chase to impede him long enough for his temperature to hit a critical level for the coagulant to activate before he hits the water.

It doesn't need one. Anything they do could only undo the impact of the original, and the ambiguity of the final shot is pure Anno.
