Same. But for some reason it almost sounds like Hank Azaria says "hold." Which on sruface doesn't seem to make much sense as opposed to the ridiculously simple and crude car "hole." However, if one were to consider the concept of something like a cargo hold, then the wording actually arguably becomes MORE sophisticated than the common term "garage."

I PREFER him saying Car Hold. I think that's funnier (more in a bit). However, the transcript describes Car Hole, and close audio analysis seems to support this assessment.

"Car Hold" is funnier, because it sounds like a legit goofy old-timey anachronistic or translated-from-foreign word someone out of touch would use. It's chuckleworthy. "Car Hole" on the other hand is simply trying too hard. It goes for that cheap laugh of "Moe is so low class everything is holes and dirt with him", and it's just not up to the usual level of linguistic cleverness Simpsons of that era was known for.

When the episode fresh in our memories during the Simpsons' golden age of popularity, my friends and I would frequently quote "Car Hold" at each other, regardless of what might have been recorded.

No it doesn't, because it's not a hole. It's trying too hard to be funny with the cheap lowbrow exaggeration of Moe's class when the straightforward approach works perfectly. "Car hold" strikes just the right balance that it'd be a plausible "working class" term as opposed to the "fancy french" "garáge". With the joke just being that everyone calls it a garage. Nobody would call it a hole, so that joke doesn't land.

What is Moe’s ancestry anyway? Italian more or less? A car hold seems like an old-country Italian kind of thing. Remember he had an accent that he repressed (canon?) So yeah, I agree “car hold” is more realistic yet unexpected which = funny. Hole is just stupid. A garage isn’t a hole any more than the kitchen or living room.
