Of all the things to defend... Yes, theoretically, you could do some interesting character stuff with this (it still wouldn't be "Spike", but whatever). What actually happens: they show him murdering a fleeing child when he almost certainly didn't have to, the VR version of "Julia" (who's also a cunt) in that one VR episode taunts him about it, and "Vicious" calls him out on how out-of-character it was (in a possible attempt at lampshading). Otherwise it has no effect on him at all. Also:

He's haunted by Julia and her death leaves him with basically nothing (except his friendship with Jet), so he seeks revenge against the guy responsible, without caring about the risk to himself.
