So let me get this straight. basically Sam went on this podcast for a serious interview. But Harland is layers deep in irony and sarcasm, even more than Sam, and Harland spent the entire interview talking nonsense which triggered Sam to push back, but then Sam realized he couldn’t crack Harlands persona so he got physical (albeit in a tame light hearted way) and still couldn’t crack Harlands character. I don't know what his podcast is like, but I remember seeing Harland being interviewed on Late Night with Conan back in the 2000s, and he was known for bizarre, entirely unserious, awkward interviews. Unless he's changed, I'm not sure what Sam expected, especially since Sam himself is known for his bizarre and unserious comedy.

Sam loves irony and shock value because they give him an advantage over whoever he's interacting with. He sees comedy as a power play, which is why so much of his comedy is about humiliating random Craigslist actors. It's sadism.
