I'm not defending the fag or his movies or the decision, BUT.

Anyone who has actually read Dredd comics or other stuff in the universe knows that it's basically schlock comedy with some pulp action thrown in. The Karl Urban movie was great but it absolutely was not the baseline tone of Judge Dredd for anyone who is familiar with the content.

the Dredd comics ranged from serious to comedy. There's no fixed tone and it would be foolish to translate them 1:1 on the big screen.
Dredd handled it better since it modified the source material for the big screen and worked extremely well with the limited budget. The audiences loved it and Urban's performance.
And please don't imply that Taiki Watit can handle humor besides the generic MCU slop tier.

Stallone Dredd captures the "wacky" comic shit (even if Dredd did a 40k and started taking itself seriously, I believe). I was taken in by Dredd 3d but it actually does have "muh brown and bloom 2010 shooter" syndrome in hindsight (still a great film) and arguably that was "necessary" for the "first" film to not go nuts with the "silly" shit.

Whether you believe it's good or not, it would entirely stand alone as a good action flick by itself.

I would like to see an Urban "serious" Dredd play the straight man to the ridiculous shit that goes on in universe

I have a soft spot for Stallone's movie. But urrbans one of definitive. If it only gets a one and done no worries. I'm happy it's a cult classic and not ruined by multiple sequels like RoboCop and highlander. I just would have thought urban would have pitched and made inroads to Amazon about doing this as a TV series considering the cache he's built up in the boys. I though a peachtrees TV series was happening

Dredd was neat, but I'd never want another one. The best part of Judge Dredd is literally the Mega City, Cursed Earth, and wackiness of the future dystopia. Dredd had zero of that. Its city was just mexico with a few spread out kowloon city buildings. I don't care about Stallone, but give me more mile high super cramped skyscrapers, flying cars, and a desolate unforgiving hellscape outside with mutants and cannibals
