Yeah, toward the end of it all he obviously felt that way, because that's historically what happens when you achieve "greatness" and become "legendary", you realise the cattle fell for a bunch of fucking lies and bullshit and you stop wanting it. But he still wrote political death threats to northern governers and still fed into the legend whenever he could, and the whole setup to get himself shot by Bob was so that he would go down in a dramatic way and not as an ignoble suicide or a humiliating capture. Obviously at some point he was as thirsty to make a mark as Bob was, that's why he figured him out so fast, too. It's mostly subtext but it's there.
