Max Landis is a hack and a lot of flaws in his Death of Superman story but frankly, he did have a way that's both edgy for Superman but in keeping with the 'I won't kill' preference most people have, i.e. Kryptonites effects are nullified when in the Phantom Zone. Superman stabs Zod with a Kryptonite dagger Luthor gave him or some shit and opens the PZ portal, so Zod basically has to scurry back in there of his volition to afford dying immediately of poisoning from what is basically a non fatal knife jab. Man of Steel is bad because of how they write Superman, not simply because he killed a bad guy. Superman kills Ultraman in the new movie after exhausting all options.
Snyder writes Superman like he can barely contain his disdain for humanity and they should be endlessly grateful for his very existence. Complete with over-done messianic imagery. He doesn't feel connected to humanity the way that other depictions of Superman do. The movie feels miserable rather than hopeful.
As sloppy as the opening scene of Whedon's Justice League was, he at least somewhat understood what Superman is about. Snyder does not.

He saves those rig workers, he saves the soldier and even asks if he's okay, Lois spells out for the audience that Clark not saving people that he can save is not an option for him because of who he is, and he has an emotional breakdown when Zod is killed.

All well and good but then we have him tackle Zod into Smallville. This isn't a bad idea on the surface, Superman being totally reckless as he's new to this, but, ultimately, he is responsible for endangering lives by bringing Zod into to the town. Remorse? Guilt? ZERO. He has zero sense that he is accountable that he has to wrestle with, and later after seeing what the Kryptonians did to Metropolis he has a nonreaction and kisses Lois and they make a joke, vs him being horrified and angry, anger he can barely contain when he confronts Zod, the architect of all this death. Instead he gives Zod this really weird look the entire time the madman is monologuing and obviously about to flip out. Imagine how good it would have been seeing Clark containing his obvious rage in an attempt to reason Zod and spell out Krypton will live again but through his way, not Zod's.

The ironic thing about Superman is that he's historically been more trigger happy than Batman, mostly because he deals with much more serious threats.
