LotR once per month.. forever
On a recent episode of his talk show, this man admitted to watching the Lord of the Rings trilogy once a month, every month, for decades.

Is this based, or psychotic?

Both.... I watch LotR frequently, but only once a year.

Me and the wife have this ritual every New Years Day, after power-drinking and dance on the Eve before, we spend the next morning hungover and binging all three LotR extended version, and just sit and do nothing.

Culture wars commentators idea of culture is a thin slither. They only like things that they can defend that are seemingly beyond reproach. Liking something else is too scary because it opens them up to criticism. They never venture outside of that comfort zone. All the do is endlessly bitch about Disney blockbusters or whatever whilst talking about the same few movies. It is impossible to argue with people like this. Everything now is bad or political and stuff on the past is good and never was political. They want stuff that's similar to what they liked before but will also bitch about every little thing. It's pointless and sad.

To be honest, when has that not been the case? In the golden age of Hollywood, b reel movies (where we got the term b movie from) were all samey and mostly shit comedies, musicals, westerns etc. The past looks great because we forget all the crap and boil it down to the good that's remembered. Problem now is more quantity and how difficult it is to refine stuff down.

It's absolutely psychotic. Something used to really irk me about LOTR fans and after finally looking into a mirror over my own obsession with certain franchises from the east I realize I've probably looked the same on the outside to people when I mention how much I used to like Dragon Ball. Pooling over topics on this website especially highlights that essentially what we're all spinning in a circle for is over the absence of God in our lives. LOTR shows "something" that might hold some possibility since Tolkein borrowed a lot from the Bible. I sometimes look at online discussion and it can appear ravenous. Almost cult-like. I'll check out posts that can give a laundry list of lore-leaning reasons to back up decision making in an artificial world in some nonsensical setting yet never being able to come up with at least three verses of scripture from something God has said in our world about our people.

I get the strong feeling that this is why God is going to say "Depart from me; I never knew you." to ALOT of people. You came home and instead of opening up a book to be with the Lord and give thanks you ran to escapism. To eagerly throw your attention into else but. It's a shame.
>B-but there are Christian themes in there
God is a jealous God. I honestly believe he leaves LOTS of breadcrumbs to come to his glory where we're supposed to extract that we're supposed to get on the path that leads to Him. So tear Him out of the equation that was used to inspire this work of fiction to land at your lap, throw away the fiction and seek more information about God and the Kingdom of Heaven.

There's pre and post SW science fiction movies and everything changed after SW. Prior to SW all we had was the umpteenth crappy to barely passable sequel to Planet of the Apes and stuff like Logan's Run.

After SW came out big budget movies across the board changed. Even outside of Sci Fi. The the quality went up because SW showed studios three was massive money to be made with big budget blockbusters. So they put more money and effort into it unlike the middle tier movies we got before like Logan's Run.

There's a clear through line from Star Wars all the way to all time classics like Alien, Aliens, Predator and every big budget sci fi blockbuster that followed.

It was a golden age that ran all the way through Endgame. (Or IW if we are nitpicking because Endgame is overrated)

After that the industry got derailed by woke social justice. Now post woke social justice we are in the mass market Netflix algorithm age with relentlessly mid slop like Superman. So yeah, things used to be better.

He's a grifter with a tinge of psychosis. I don't believe for a second that he's actually sitting down and engrossed watching these movies, he probably has them playing in the background while he works out or edits his videos to reinforce his memory of them. Why? Because he's savvy enough to know the LotR trilogy are hailed as objectively good, even if they're not truly faithful to the books. He can compare literally whatever he's ragging on at the moment to LotR to legitimize his criticisms, and the more vividly he can describe scenes from LotR, the more genuine he appears.
