Honestly adapting the book 1 to 1 will be a bare bones anthology series. You have to build on top of it. Connect the dots. Use the footnote characters to create depth and conveniently fill in plotholes. Emory Hill is a nobody Lannister bastard that dies at the Fishfeeds. Why not introduce him as a squire for Tyland Lannister? Have him get a father son bonding moment with Lord Caswell after he sees him looking sad after someone like Aemond makes a bastard joke. Caswell opens up about his own bastard son and the guilt he feels. Not much screen time honestly. Why? Because Tyland can give Emory a task to capture some lords during the Green coup, leading to a tense where he catches Caswell trying to escape, he thinks about letting him go but is interrupted by Clarent Crakehall, another squire, who congratulates him for the catch. Emory is rewarded with a knighthood, given honours and tasked with taking the gold to Lannisport. Along the way he stops at Bitterbridge meeting with Lady Caswell, he bites his tongue. When he reaches Highgarden, news comes out of Lord Caswell being executed and we see the guilt eat him up.

At the Lakeshore, he takes the reigns when Humfrey Lefford turns senile, organising and leading the defense against the attacks. To explain why the Winter Wolves lost so many men we can have Emory fight back well. He's a competent leader, an honourable man, loved by his men. I get all the complaints about Rhaenyra being whitewashed and all the narrative damage it has caused so far, but I think it's unfair to say it's still going on. S2 especially its last few episodes are very clearly starting to put her on the path to Maegor With Teats, albeit with the twist of being a deranged fanatic instead of just being greedy.

She's starting to babble more and more about being ordained by the gods, in the last episode she greenlights burning down Green cities because the gods will it.

Her interactions with Jace are probably the biggest examples. She keeps burying her nose into history books pretending she's Visenya, and there's a curious moment when Jace tells her "uhh maybe you shouldn't do that" and she has this very defensive and indignant reaction, like she can't even understand why Visenya was hated. Her reaction to Jace's warning about the future is actually great, her sniffled "I..I mislike all of this :(((" just makes her look so deranged, like she values her personal ambition over the safety of her son but she's trying to make herself seem like the victim.

She goes too far with the Sowing, even the dragonkeepers tell her she's losing it and they go away. When the Sowing is over you hear Rhaenyra's theme playing again, but for the first time you can hear this slightly darker twist to it. The production itself is aware that Rhaenyra is changing and it's into something clearly not good.

This could have been done way better and arguably it should've started much earlier and more overtly, but you're wrong if you believe Rhaenyra will remain a whitewashed good guy with 0 bad traits. Her downfall is being set up and foreshadowed and I can easily see a future in which even normies look at her antics in S3/S4 and think to themselves she's become something awful.
