The subject came up in a discussion yesterday and I mentioned some figures: Martha Coolidge, Nina Menkes, Susan Seidelman, Penelope Spheeris, Joan Micklin Silver, Mary Lambert, Claudia Weill, Amy Heckerling, Kathryn Bigelow. What's interesting is that a lot of them successfully transitioned into commercial filmmaking and some of their hits became pop-culture classics: Valley Girl, Desperately Seeking Susan, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Near Dark.

ah, then I have seen The Decline of Western Civilization trilogy from Spheeris, Halloweentown II and Urban Legends: Bloody Mary from Lambert, Clueless from Heckerling, and Point Break and The Hurt Locker from Bigelow. none of which I would really classify as "feminist" films other than maybe Clueless. I came across this site when trying to see if I'd seen any films from second-wave feminists, and there are some interesting looking shorts/films there, all from directors you didn't mention

As was noted above, second wave feminism films are less explicitly and or antagonistically feminist. But even if they are, female perspective can be interesting from observational point of view. For example, I liked the point about Daisies made in the previous thread, about careless and capricious side of female subversivenes. This kind of automatic, instinctive way of constructing films and behaving inside them is at least fresh, at most exhilarating and guarantees a satisfying watch if you can keep your mind open.
