>Question of the day
Who's your favorite second-wave feminist filmmaker?
>>212953934 (OP)>QOTDI don't know who classifies as a second-wave feminist, and I don't think I've seen a film from a single one
>>212954446The subject came up in a discussion yesterday and I mentioned some figures: Martha Coolidge, Nina Menkes, Susan Seidelman, Penelope Spheeris, Joan Micklin Silver, Mary Lambert, Claudia Weill, Amy Heckerling, Kathryn Bigelow. What's interesting is that a lot of them successfully transitioned into commercial filmmaking and some of their hits became pop-culture classics: Valley Girl, Desperately Seeking Susan, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Near Dark.
>>212954680ah, then I have seen The Decline of Western Civilization trilogy from Spheeris, Halloweentown II and Urban Legends: Bloody Mary from Lambert, Clueless from Heckerling, and Point Break and The Hurt Locker from Bigelow. none of which I would really classify as "feminist" films other than maybe Clueless. I came across this site when trying to see if I'd seen any films from second-wave feminists, and there are some interesting looking shorts/films there, all from directors you didn't mention
https://artsandculture.google.com/story/artists-activists-second-wave-feminist-filmmakers-barbican-centre/8QWBohMlbu_NJA?hl=en
my knowledge on female directors as a whole is extremely surface level, so maybe that's something I should dive into more sometime in the future
>>212954941Interesting link, thanks. I'm also just starting a dive into female directors and watch almost anything I come across, and I have to say that apart from some disingenuous personalities like Jane Fonda the first stage of "women's lib" feels a lot more organic, but maybe it's the just the benefit of hindsight that smoothes sharp edges.
>>212954446It's just that feminists don't produce memorable or noteworthy things as a general rule.
>>212955359Yet you did watch Fast Times at Ridgemont High
>>212953934 (OP)I was excited for an alternative thread, but QOTD ruined it. Why would you watch a film directed by a woman?
>>212955634As was noted above, second wave feminism films are less explicitly and or antagonistically feminist. But even if they are, female perspective can be interesting from observational point of view. For example, I liked the point about Daisies made in the previous thread, about careless and capricious side of female subversivenes. This kind of automatic, instinctive way of constructing films and behaving inside them is at least fresh, at most exhilarating and guarantees a satisfying watch if you can keep your mind open.
>>212955634you're missing out on some kino
I'm gonna be busy, someone please bump my thread if you care
the has got to be one of the most beautifully shot films to come out last year
>>212956931>>212956949>dude concrete is evil lmaoI could have told you that and saved you two hours lol
>>212957293I don't care about the message. I just think it looks fantastic
>>212955634Because sex and gender are irrelevant in art, chud.
>>212958891sorry, starting dozing off watching a mediocre found footage film

any other 2025 films I should watch?
>>212960869Maybe 6; poster looks interesting.
>>212960962I meant other than those because they are the films I'm already planning on watching
>>212960869I'll watch Nouvelle Vague no matter how shit it is.
>>212961019Brother, unironically watch James Gunn's Superman; it's a super fun movie that did everything right, with a great performance by Hoult. Obviously not arthouse, but a 10/10 movie entertainmentwise.
>>212961324I have no interest in Superman or comic book movies in general anymore
>>212961456Neither did I, but that film is unironically great. I watched it with friends and I was laughing the whole time.
>>212961503ok, shill. whatever you say. I definitely go spend money to watch James Gunn's Superman produced and distributed by DC Studios and Warner Bros. now. many laughs will be had. it will be the very best film of the year, hands down
>>212960016Tell that to the feminists and trannies.
>>212961669Don't watch it. I saw the Fallout show recently after not engaging with slop since 2019 (Joker, it was ok) and it was so unbelieveably gigaslopped I felt my brain being raped in real time. Never again.
we should rename this thread back to /cinรฉ/ or /kino/ to fully separate from /film/
if someone told you these were the best films of the 21st century so far, how would you react?
>>212961851I think /cinรฉ/ is the way, but both names are good imo.
>>212961770Extremist right wingers are just as retarded as extremist left wingers.
>>212961984With a bellyful of keks and an intention to teach them the secrets of cinema.
I don't want no schism, hell naw!
>>212961851Good idea. They'll never find us that way.
>>212962148fuck off back to /film/
>>212953934 (OP)>QOTDBipa ะคapะผiาa.
>>212960549Queen of /cinรฉ/ or /kino/
>>212961851I named it .alt as a connection to the counterculture theme of the thread and the OP picture. If we are going to have split threads regularly, then yes, a more classy name would be appropriate. However, I don't think it will be necessary and frankly I don't want it - this counterbake was a radical measure as a response to the waifutranny's treacherous bake. The split will naturally reconcile itself like it did the last time.
>>212962164it has nothing to do with "them finding us", just to fully separate the threads so mods don't get mad. /film/ will be for waifufags and discordtrannies to jerk each other off and the other general will be for actual film discussion
>>212962202Is she actually a feminist filmmaker, or you just memeing?
>>212962251>treacherousIt's her birthdayโฆ
>>212962252>/film/ will be for waifufags and discordtrannies to jerk each other off and the other general will be for actual film discussionI'm sure they'll abide by your rules and won't just abandon /film/ for here if it takes off (or post here even it doesn't just out of spite).
>>212962346why come here just to start shit when they can stay in their bubble without harassment from anons who are tired of their shit?
>>212962346They will, -and they already said they will post on here if the threads take off-, because those faggots are addicted to attention, but we can just shit on them until they fuck off. If you notice, even on /f*lm/ the waifufagging has declined since people started shitting on them, because they can't actually take the heat.
>>212962252Solemn isolation is boring, we're on an imageboard, remember. There's nothing wrong with chaotic fun of shitposting, but only when it's at the level of general noise and doesn't devolve into a discord chat room circlejerkery.
>>212962406Because the harassment doesn't discourage them in any way (quite the opposite) and as much as you can pretend to be high-minded and diplomatic, a thread schism is itself starting shit so they'd just see it as retaliating.
>>212962296I don't care. I would have absolutely nothing against a regular post.
>>212962489>If you notice, even on /f*lm/ the waifufagging has declined since people started shitting on themYes, I noticed that and was very pleased. That's why the today's treachery came as a surprise - I'd genuinely thought we had some sort of equilibrium. But the explanation is probably as simple as the waifutranny is a retard that can't read the room.

Best old school american films? I really feel a big nostalgia for old time americana, and recently watched It's a Wonderful Life and cried. Values were so different back then.
>>212962882Bigger Than Life
ANYWAY...speaking of female directors, what are the odds Ulrike Ottinger's upcoming film will be any good? it's her first non-documentary film in 20+ years
>>212962882Shane (1953). It's sweet to the point of melancholy, almost spiritual, saintly. Also top 3 best looking Technicolor western.
>>212962288Yes, she is both a feminist and a filmmaker. Never made anything on the same level as Spheeris though.
Wayne's World is /film/ btw
>>212963036Isn't the cunt like 100
Liliana Cavani made a film also old as fuck in like 2023 and it was terrible
>>212960016Only vaguely worthwhile female director is Ida Lupino. But she was a boss bitch.
>>212962882some personal favorite lesser seen American films from the 30s-50s

>>212963073Shane FUCKING SUCKS. GEORGE STEVENS IS A FUCKING HACK. How many times do you retards need to be told this? It's not in the top 100 westerns, in fact it's in the bottom 10 westerns ever made.
>>21296326383. she made a documentary back in 2020 that was fairly well received (I haven't watched it yet), so she might still be able to pull it off
What are the last 5 (five) films that you watched that you actually enjoyed?
>>212963433You're a dumb retard who cannot distinct kino from garbage. You should kill yourself.
>>212963369You just weren't in the mood. It's very different from other westerns, it's like a tender, lyrical bedtime story told to a child. Give it another chance if you can.
But I do agree that Stevens is a hack in general.

>>212963531>Kaili BluesI was heavily sleep deprivated when I watched it, and my body ached horribly, so the dreamlike imagery and lull atmosphere really relaxed me. The film also reminded me of childhood... all in all, it was a really great masterpiece of comfy cinema, 4.5/5.
>Out of the PastMitchum had mad swag for the most part, bitches were hot and the villain was great. Overall, a really solid noir, 3.5/5.

Oh well. I choose /alt/ because I like alternative rock. Sonic Youth are my favourite band. Did you guys catch Demonlover by Olivier Assayas?
Have any fellow Cronenspergs read his novel? My completionist autism is impelling me but I'm reading Leo Toystory at the moment. Also need to read Bresson on Bresson and Cronenberg on Cronenberg.
What are some quintessential /film/ texts? I have Tark's book already.
>>212966572no one wants you here. go back to your waifu containment thread
I think we all could collectively choose to ignore cringers or just respond to their on-topic stuff if interesting enough. I will do just that. #savereal/film/(now/cinรฉ/).
>>212966277Nah, starting thread-dominating arguments about waifufagging is how you deprive them of attention and power. Our insults cut them to their core which is why we've had a spate of threads without any waifufagging lately. A moratorium on on-topic posting is a price worth-paying for /filmic/ righetousness.
>>212965497Gadonfag will get nuked, Kinskifag is here, and Harperfag isn't even posting Harper. This thread won.

>>212966335>to have ganglike behavior in bullying the other postersWhat on earth are you even talking about?
>>212966277I used to think that way, but in practice it's not enough. Ignoring posts works both ways, and waifutrannies can ignore on-topic discsuission, existing in parallel to it and creating their own little chat bubbles. The arguments and the split threads and everything is a unfortunate and painful measure, I know, but it's temporary and necessary to pop their bubble. Notice how they happen in cycles, we had a peaceful week, and the current conflict is less tense because all sides know what to expect from each other. This is a sign of emerging learned behavior, and a proof of positive changes.
>>212966730It was obvious that the real /film/ thread with real /film/ posters was gonna win. As I said previously, we should just ignore cringers, report cringers if they become too obnoxious and encourage real /film/ discourse and conversation; that way we'll save /film/.

>>212967254The ironic part of kylie boy's quest is that most of us would rather just put up with 10% being off topic waifu shit and treat it as background noise, rather than have 90% of every single thread be about him as thread main character forcing us to talk about it. oh well. all one can do is stick his head in the sand and continue to talk about films.
>>212967311Nothing too much. But waifutrannies wouldn't be themselves if they knew moderation. They just can't help it.
>>212967373So you have no timeframe and you're content to do this for longer than we've had waifufagging because you don't give a shit about anyone but yourself. Gotcha.
>>212967296You are the cringer by starting this incredibly redundant, off-topic argument. (You) are the problem here.
Ok, but are Leni Riefenstahl's feet considered waifufagging?
When someone starts throwing a tantrum over waifuposting, it results in no one discussing film; maybe that's the goal all along?
>>212967464Lil bro said, "I hate waifuposting so I'm going to make every thread about waifuposting for eternity". Lex Luthor ahh
>>212967483kino film. one of my favorites of the 20's. more people need to watch it
>>212967457Ok.
>>212967386Yet you waifufags' taste is completely basic shit at best, and terrible shit at worst.
>>212967508Yeah, it's better to just ignore waifuposters and do what we know to do.
>>212967535tarkovsky le bad because i saw him mentioned next to a photo of a woman
>>212967535You are completely obsessed with shitting on all of our individual tastes yet completely blind to your own. Delusional.
>>212967443>Nothing too muchThat's meaningless. To me it's basically never "that much" barring when you start shit with them.
hey filterdodging jackass, what do you think youre doing adding another title? huh? i was having a great time and then this faggot /film/ sneaks up on me.
i'll be watching john frankenheimer's seconds (1966) in a bit. i'll report back later, just this once. faggots
>>212967575Is it the same guy that was seething about Sunset Boulevard being in a top 10 yet refused to post films he liked in response? What a dork.
>>212967572No, he's actually mostly mid due to his overreliance on scifi (a wack genre since the beginning).
is it a good idea to watch it together with a gf? she has not seen it before
>>212967632Won't she be scared? It looks spooky ;____;
To Kyle and all waifufags, let's see who has better taste. Post your top 25-50 films from the 21st century that didn't make the NYT list (for reference: https://letterboxd.com/mogwai_synth/list/new-york-times-100-best-movies-of-the-21st/)
>>212967623Yes, I remember when the spaceships flew down, abducted Anatoly Solonitsyn and probed his butt hole in Andrei Rublev. Really ruined the movie for me. Shut up silly.
>midSpeak like an adult.
>>212967593>I-i-is that a thread discussing cinema?! On my politics and box office numbers board!?! MODS!
>>212967611>Is it the same guy that was seething about Sunset Boulevard being in a top 10 yet refused to post films he liked in response? It probably is. I wouldn't put Sunset in my top 10 but it's still a 10/10 imo.
>>212967593Imagine using filters. KWAB
Now that /alt/ was a resounding failure and completely (predictably to all but the sub-80 IQ kylemeister) indistinguishable from all other /film/ threads, I say we go back to normal /film/ in the next one and ditch the suffix.
>>212967763you mean the rare instances of not waifu, yugioh and wiggerposting? not worth it. i'd rather catch a sporadic, random and impulsive thread in the wild.
