When it started, AEW was advertised to be the competition to bring the good old days back to wrestling.
Instead, it turned out to be full of borderline midgets jumping around the ring and doing ironic jokes that not casual watcher would enjoy. Their stories were generally terrible and when they brought guys who actually looked like a wrestler, said guys were devoid of charisma and they had no character worth watching.
The old nostalgia acts were all drowned in this mess and couldn't change much.
In short, it shares a lot of the negatives of current WWE and brings almost none of the old positives.

They have more money because of TV rights deals and public trading, not because of their actual product. They basically got the "free money" cheat. It used to be that you relied on your ticket sales, your merch sales, etc, to make money as a company and if those fell you were punished for it and might even go out of business, so you had to try to correct things if they fell. Now they have guaranteed amounts of money regardless of what they do so they just do what they want. They also pivoted to making "the brand" the real star of the show, not any one wrestler.
