Early non-shill reactions are in and surprisingly they are mixed to positive.
>Stakes are raised

Everything about the future of the MCU is banking on this movie so it MUST have good reviews. It MUST have a strong box office. If this bombs it's over. Disney and Feige know this. It is all about optics for Disney and they are all-in on this movie because they HAVE to be. This means paying off critics. Yes even "non-shill" reviewers aren't safe. Chris Gore was roasting this movie nonstop but is now saying it's one of the best MCU movies in recent years and a step in the right direction. You thought the gaslighting over Gunn Superman was bad just wait until this releases. Do not trust anyone's opinion on this movie as it determines the next decade of the MCU. Fantastic Four even so much as underperforming (Less than 550m WW) would be akin to a nuclear bomb being dropped on the pop culture consensus.

I've watched it, it was okay. Decent, even. The Galactus/F4 arc is my favourite Superhero/Comic arc so my standards were kind of elevated. Hard to tell whether critics will love or loathe it.
Pros:
>Strong retrofuturistic 60's quirky style. It still suffers from the typical MCU color grading issues, but the aesthetic commitment is very strong.
>Mostly strong acting and characterisation, although Kirby is easily the worst and doesn't look like she's taking the role seriously in numerous scenes. Ineson unsurprisingly knocks Galactus's voice out the park
>Great Space scenes, and astronaut team dynamic
>Faithful Galactus design - albeit with the CGI on his face looking really slapdash in the earth-set finale
>Generally decent fight scenes, although the usage of the team's powers besides Johnny feel surprisingly scarce
>Great OST that makes full use of the 'Fantastic Four' leitmotif you've probably heard in the trailers and imbues the film with a comic energy
>General strong unpretentious comic atmosphere that feels elevated from our reality and goofy. Bearing political and social commentary in mind, it's a bit of a palette cleanser compared to Superman and will probably be more popular with children and women

Cons:
>Extremely choppy/expedited pacing, especially at the beginning, takes a while to find its feet. You get the sense a lot of stuff was cut/reshuffled. Superman also had this problem being an in-media-res style narrative, but won you over with the strength of the characterisation and Lex especially.
>Silver Surfer feels incredibly underutilised and underdeveloped. Her intro is ridiculously expedited from a hodgepodge of other developing plot points and it feels like the film is racing to Galactus. Huge waste of a decent actress and character. She does have some standout scenes especially in the space part of the film. Probably could have used one or two solo scenes to develop her presence and psyche and make her finale stand out more.
>Extremely dodgy CGI in certain scenes with The Thing, particularly in his first encounter with Natasha Lyonne's character, which feels completely superfluous and as underbaked as it was in the mid-2000's equivalent
>The Thing/Ben in general feels like an accessory without a character arc or significant feat of his own
>Galactus is held back and pushed into his ultimate demise by Sue's forcefield power pretty much alone in the film's climax, severely degrading the feel of the stature and inexorable godly might that's meant to be held in his possession. His downfall should be the result of his own folly/the Surfer's free will etc. He's reduced to a sort of lumbering Kaiju-esque titan wreaking havoc on the city. You definitely get the impression Galactus would have better served here had the team had one or two previous films to build up their characters.

For what it's worth, I thought both films had strong visual styles, each with their own flaws. Superman's cinematography was strangely washed out and bleached in certain scenes, but other's were great like the one where he's sat with Lois as the Justice Gang battle a giant space squid in the background. Superman also had the pocket dimension with looked like garbage.
Fantastic Four has that retro-future style and Jetsons-like aesthetic sensibility to its tech, but also suffers from Marvel's typical cinematographic crutches. Surprisingly it's the scenes where they're flying around in the spaceship that look the strongest.
>>212985306
I don't think so, just because Lex Luthor was a much better villainous thrust driving the narrative forward. I don't think the Herald of Galactus was the best story for them to start with. I get that Marvel probably didn't want to wait too long before getting the F4 cast in the MCU proper, but it feels kinda rushed.
>>212985333
Decent, but noticeably austere in usage. He mostly uses it to get around and reach for things, rather than contorting himself in ridiculous ways or shapes. The mid-2000's film, maligned as they were, at least did far more creative things with the team's abilities. I think it's actually quite strange just how much better those films looked in terms of special effects, even if they were narratively compromised.
