You got to take into account if it already hasn't been in this thread that the apex of pro-wrestling happened when two of the biggest promotions on the planet engaged into a ratings war against each other, so it was a constant game of one-upsmanship and dick measuring. There were so many other factors involved and one of them was the caliber of talent that was available. In order to have a good season, you gotta have a good team of players. Wackiness, showmanship, character work, buffoonery and antics, crassness and vulgarity, engaging storylines, and crazy moments that caused ratings to go up made wrestling take a back seat. While all this was going on, the true renegade of the time, ECW, who couldn't compete with the majors in terms of lighting and pyro accentuated what they were good at which was the interviews,wildest brawls, bloodiest battles and great wrestling from wrestlers around the world, exposing them to US audiences for the first time. There was also a major lack of entertainment options compared to now. It wasn't just wrestling companies they were competing for eyeballs with; Seinfeld and Friends and Frasier were all raking in amazing ratings. Also keep in mind how much of an outlet wrestling was for masculine energy and aggression during a time of peace in the world and this was before UFC taking off.
Now that its gone fully corporate with one major poomotion in town (AEW doesn't count sorry trannies) the only thing left to do is the same thing that wrestling had to do after the buyouts of WCW/ECW and WWE going public in 2002 and have it return to its roots. Independent promotions sprang up in the wake and all the hot stars then are the veterans of today. In that regard, another boom is possible now with the long drive to further global expansion underway. Places like India still believe that its as real as everyone did in the 80s and China has a very small but burgeoning wrestling scene. Like horror films; wrestling never dies, just goes to sleep.
