It works in cartoons and comics where you also have complete control of the surrounding spaces in every sense. If you feel the costume clashes with other colors, add a light that changes the colors or deliberately play into the clashing element to draw attention. With live action, the amount of planning required for this is genuinely insane so most people just do new costumes and character designs. It is possible to do it of course, it just takes a level of skill and effort most people simply don't have.

You can fix it assuming its a character with a few scenes, once you're dealing with a 90 minute movie and maybe 20 scenes and you're also dealing with an ensemble cast like X-men where multiple characters have to occupy the same space, the simplest solution is just have them all wear basically the same outfit or simply ruin the lighting and colors to the point where the extreme vibrancy of the costumes don't matter so you might as well not have done it in the first place.

There are a couple of factors at play in why movie costumes look like dogshit compared to good cosplay.
1. Directors are arrogant and want to put "their spin" instead of giving people what they want.
2. The costume makers that make all the bad stuff have ingrained themselves into the Hollywood machine so much that their quality can be crap but studios will not allow outsiders in, even if there is much better to be had cheaply.
3. The neo-prudism surrounding female characters requires that they be covered up in formless bodysuits which requires major alteration to the original designs.
