It starts off very good, but you can literally see in the third act how he runs out of time and money and everything is wrapped up in the most flaccid way possible. You can basically edit out everything but Cesar's monologues and speeches, and it would have been a more cathartic experience.

one of my favorite films ever, for sure Coppola's magnum opus as intended. it has a very cheesy hopeful "envision utopia and it will come" thing going on, very romantic about American ideals and democracy but it's so sincere it's hard to rip it to shreds for that. In one sentence it's about crafting something new from the ashes rather than clinging onto a fallen Rome.

It's the most awful movie ever made, and because of that one of the most entertaining. The Room is some nutty eastern euro guy who got given too much money, it's shit because he doesn't know what he's doing, but Megalopolis is a tier above that, an unfiltered, unhinged, 80 year old totally off his marbles trying to make high art yet resulting in something that feels like a pretentious teenager who just realised America is just like Rome and that's a very serious thing. There is no other movie like it.

Adam Driver cannot act for shit. Every "decent" film he's been in has seen his performance redeemed in the editing room.
Casting him was the achilles heel of this production. I mean, after all, this is the guy who was pivotal in destroying Star Wars as a marketable IP... but I understand most of you are still too hungup on the chuckle brothers JJ and Rian and aren't ready to have that conversation.

I loved it but I can understand why almost no one else did.
It's basically a bunch of FFC's stoner ideas awkwardly wrapped into an ancient-style tragicomedy.
It remined me of Spy Kids 3, where the entire movie feels like a fever dream. There's plenty you can criticize from a technical/writing standpoint but the whole package is so outrageous that it's hard to really care, if you're in the mood for it.

I did get to see 90's classics like Pulp Fiction and Fight Club when they first came out and they weren't as absolutely attention grabbing at this film was
The reception was chilling and a real slap to the face;
There's really a thing as a audience failing to you.

Of course someone how made several films like this already (a pop classic, a historic disaster, a cult classic that went nowhere and a dozen of experimental films) would know how to make something crazy with a marvel level budget and complete 100% total creative freedom

It's about the inception of cinema as an art form. The characters are allegories for different aspects of culture and society of the late 19th century.
>>212998174 (OP)
This is how a true artist thinks. He's cruel, selfish, and unfeeling. He works without caring what happens to either him or the audience.
This would've been a lot more acceptable in the 60s and some other country like Italy or Japan. American cinema is so heavily dumbed down to be commercially viable that the minds of moviegoers has been sterilized in terms of art appreciation. Francis knew what he was getting himself into, and he did it anyway. That's the way of the artist.
