The weird facial expressions I keep seeing are keeping me from giving this a chance. The sort of facial expressions that the characters in Turning Red would make, quasi-anime le derp faces. It works for little kid characters because, yknow, they are kids, but for adults that are supposed to be hot it's jarring and not in a good way. Makes the characters not at all cute and it's off-putting. It's this spastic time of humor that can work in certain situations (i.e. if the characters are kids) but not here.

I'll check some of these out too anon. I did like Parasite unlike that other anon. Train to Busan was alright. Apart from that the only kdrama I have seen was Goblin which was recommended to me because I asked for the best kdrama rom coms. There were kino moments but overall I found the chemistry a bit lacking (probably cultural differences), a lot of dead air and dragging out the plot/resetting, skin deep lore (expected for a mass appeal tv show), unoriginality, and other soapy elements that kept me from enjoying it all that much.

There is still very decent anime being produced, albeit rarely and increasingly so given the sheer volume of slop being pumped by the weeb industrial complex. Some examples: Sonny Boy aired a couple of years ago and it's unironically a work of art; Miyazaki's lasted film was a muscular showing from a mature and thoughtful auteur; CITY THE ANIMATION is a currently airing anime that typifies the aesthetic greatness that anime as a medium is capable of achieving. There are more examples of this, of course, but I won't bore you.

Regardless, the claim that anime is in the decline is, I feel, fair criticism. Though even anime slop is generally less offensive than 95% of Western media. Anime also has the advantage of being Japanese and thus not sounding like fucking dog, unlike Korean or Chinese media. China undermines it's own artistic expression so there is nothing good that is being produced in the country, even the jingoist insectoid bullshit like Hero is extremely cynical if you judge it with eyes unclouded; the best Chinese productions are ironically the CHINA BAD documentaries like Behemoth. Also, China cannot retroactively claim Jackie Chan movies, that is against the rules and they need to fuck off.

Korean media suffers from excessive materialism and small dick syndrome. Films like Parasite, despite not being the cinematic feast that some pretend it to be, are very clear when it comes to the insectoid class structures of Korean society. It's a general oriental trend that is certainly not unique to Korea of course, but perhaps exists in its purest form in that country. Everything else is extremely artificial and materialistic, like a dystopian parody. At least I love how much they seethe about Japan, that is fun to see.

That is a very specific Masaki Yuasa anime, so you might want to check out his filmography. The Mind Game film by Yuasa would be something you would enjoy, but I'd recommend Ping Pong The Animation by Yuasa as well, it's a sports thing but I feel it's a very powerful and universal story that anyone is capable of enjoying.

If what draws you is the more experimental and abstract side of Kaiba, you should check out Sonny Boy because it is truly a work of art and shares many of the experimental sensibilities of Kaiba. Sonny Boy might require some patience, but I think it's very much worth it for what it delivers, it's an experience worth living.

I understand why people are frustrated by anime because it's like fucking steampunk, it exists solely as potential and nothing more. But there is genuinely great films and great shows if you're willing to sift though a lot of shit.

Secondly, I have no idea as to why "anime/manga" doesn't count in your estimation despite being a multibillion dollar industry. Thirdly, and finally, why is it that all of Asian keeps following Japanese trends and in many instances camouflages itself as Japanese, as you see in stuff like webcomics, gachatrash, videogames, etc?

I'm not saying this to be cruel, I'm not saying this to be polemic, but Japan won a culture war and you need to deal with this fact.
