If you couldn't comprehend that MoS was specifically the Superman for the 9/11 generation, you're brown. That's why it's dark and a little gritty in tone; the Snyder films are about persevering against cynicism and evil in the face of doubt, despair and disillusionment. So Cavill's Superman often fails; he makes terrible mistakes, he has doubt gnawing at his heart. He's trying his damnedest to do the right thing and it keeps blowing up (literally) in his face. He also has flaws: he acts unilaterally because he thinks that "desperate courage makes one man a Republic"; he's sullen, withdrawn, and not given to explaining himself like a rational individual (this would have fixed 90% of his problems in BvS). If we had wanted to adapt The Boys, he would have done The Boys. Personally, I can't imagine why anyone would ever want to read tasteless Garth Ennis edgeslop, though. MoS doesn't get anywhere near that shit. At no point is Superman trying to cause harm intentionally, the harm he does cause is by recklessness and inexperience. He learns from this by next movie (hence taking the Doomsday fight immediately to space), but more importantly he also suffers the consequences of his mistakes that eventually lead to his death.

Also, keep in mind that Zod had made it quite clear to the entirety of humanity that he was going to wipe them off the face of the earth, and then proceeded to demonstrate the capacity to do so with the World Engine. In the eyes of most humans, the collateral damage from Superman's intervention is a small price to pay for the survival of the other 8 billion humans.
