I thought they were druids or shamans or something. They would wear a belt made out of wolf fur and drink rainwater out of a wolf's footprint. This let them transform into a wolf. The only way you could tell it wasn't a real wolf was the lack of a tail, so the werewolf would stick out its back leg to look like a tail

Maybe something based off a Spynx or Lamassu. Instead of wolf man a man with wolf like features, a man wolf a wolf with some man like features. From a distance it looks like an animal but it has a human-ish face. Maybe it has something like opposable thumbs but it's still this big wolf like creature.

I maintain that the best filmic werewolf to date is Prisoner of Azkaban. The design is genuinely creepy and meancing (not in picrel so much because that's the moment he's just transformed and the kids think he can still be reasoned with), shit had me scared for months after seeing it as a kid. I like the classic "big powerful wolfman" depiction as anyone, but track record shows it doesn't translate well to the big screen, despite working well in art and vidya. Alternatively, Eggers could go the "literal wolf" route (something I have a suspicion he'll end up doing) and make him look like e.g. Sirius in picrel, that's a cool direction too

I liked how the werewolves could be temporarily injured, but not killed by normal weapons unless it was some ridiculous amount of damage, and were still intelligent, not mindless.
Spoon's fight is a thing of legend.
The reveal that they had been playing with the soldiers for fun all along and merely exhausting the soldier's weapons and ammo was terrifying.

Just make the wolf form slash people up in the night and then have the guy wake up in a torn flannel with a stomach ache and blood everywhere. Make him get hunted while he's also trying to deal with it and losing his mind.

Yup. Great atmospheric movie that still holds up and taps into some of my first memories of being scared. I don't really understand the Megan characters motivations still though.

Didn't Leigh Whannell just make a realistic werewolf movie?

I think she wanted a boyfriend. She was testing them out to see which was the best choice. She didn't want to be there, but had no choice anymore after becoming one.
Remember during Sarge's story about the guy with the tattoo on his ass? The cow flopping into their camp?
The werewolves killed the assault team, but left the bait team and pushed them towards the house.
"Here's a bunch of guys. Hurry up and pick your favorite, we'll eat the rest."
Cooper just wasn't taking her bait. She chose him, and it seemed right at the end before she was shot, that she had decided to take Cooper by force.
The werewolves would have gotten rid of the soldiers hunting them, and added an SF candidate to their ranks.
That's what it looked like to me.

The traditional "werewolf" was just when a guy went crazy and ate babies

I'm glad they changed that. Wolves aren't that scary on their own. An average man could beat one wolf

Speaking of werewolves, did you know there was a very solid werewolf tv series from the late 80s? 29 episodes. Watch it to quench your werewolf thirst.

well, not like that. i hate those. visually he can do pretty cool stuff if he wants, there doesnt need to be much ambiguity or pretentious subtext. even vvitch is rather straightforward and everything that can be red into it is already present in witch lore (dangers of the woods, dangers of strangers etc.) baba yaga for example, as you see in john wick, is called baba zima in the balkans. its essentially a warning for the winter, a cautionary tale.

so i'd rather have him do a cautionary tale sort of movie with neat visuals.

In the original tale Jekyll was in control the entire time. Hyde was just a persona to be a violent maniac with. His issue came with the potion becoming permanent and thus he wouldn't be able to escape punishment for his crimes.

He needs reigning in. Limit his budget, he will give us kino.
Left to his own devices / told how special he is by all the sycophants surrounding him, we’ll get nothing but an endless stream of β€œNosferatu.”

I know what I’m expecting.
