The fundamental problems was that Sam Hyde can't do improv comedy. Think about any time he's actually been funny: it's always him reading off a sheet of paper or doing a skit. Nothing wrong with that; some comics are good improvisers and others are good with written material.

But in this case, Sam had no choice gut to do improv comedy to fit the rhythm of Harland's show, and he just couldn't do it. I think he hadn't seen the show and thought that there would be a more traditional mix of comedy with serious moments/politics talk, which Sam is good at making off-the-cuff "shock" comments about which is always good for a few laughs. But instead Harland always keeps his show focused on pure silliness improv comedy. Sam just doesn't have that skill set so he was faced with either looking like a lame guest or trying to change the energy, and he chose to gorilla out.
