For storyline purposes guys like vader would pick him up and slam him sometimes (and he would no sell it and power up, and then end the match seconds later).
In the late 70s hogan obviously paid his dues as did all wrestlers back then, but his career was as long as it was becauae he had significant storyline control over much of his career and limited what moves he would receiver.
