Overrated. Daniel Plainview isn't like any human that has existed, industrialist greed came from indifference and ignorance, they weren't seething misanthropic supervillains like Daniel. DDL's performance is cartoonish and overblown. There is no subtlety or precision. Impressive bit of filmmaking but shallow and warped like the rest of PTA's work.

Everything happening on the screen comes off so real that I forget I'm watching a film and it feels like a window into that time and place. Only other film by whose authenticity I remember feeling THIS engrossed is Master & Commander.

The cut from HW learning sign language with that girl and then jumping to their wedding might be my favorite sequence in all of kino history.
