I recently did the Dixon Hill trilogy. The Big Goodbye s01e12, Manhunt s02e19 and Clues s04e14. And I wondered what the specific inspiration of Dixon Hill was? If any. Because my first assumption was that is was just a broad pastiche. Without ONE inspiration. So, I go to a search engine and research that query. And it sends me to a an old reddit thread.

The top (only) poster in that thread confidently states that Dixon Hill is based on Humphrey Bogart's character from 'In a Lonely Place'. And then I go watch In a Lonely Place. Great flick. But, not the basis of Dixon Hill. Surely. It's a noir. But not a hardboiled PI type one. Bogart plays a screenwriter accused of murder. They just have a similar name. The original poster of that thread was closer with Where the Sidewalk Ends. At least that main character is a detective. I've seen that too. Gene Tierney is a babe. There's this great scene in that one right at the start. Where Dana Andrews' detective character is talking to his boss. And they're at a promotion party of one of the other cops. And his boss is like, 'you and him went to the academy together. And now he's the captain of his own precinct. And you keep getting demoted because of doing police brutality to suspects. Just for the sake of your own career, can you please stop beating up hoods'. And Dana Andrews responds with a very Dana Andrews-esq stone-face 'no, I will not.'

I think my initial thought was right. Dixon Hill is just pastiche. I've read a fair bit of Dashiell Hammett. Some Raymond Chandler. And I've seen at least several dozen Golden Age noirs. And it's just a broad amalgamation of that. Not one specific.

Every episode of TOS and TNG is an island. DS9 started Soap Trek. "Why don't they use the shuttles in episodes where they can't use transporters?" Shuttles aren't a thing in this episode. "Why can Data use contractions in this episode when he said that he couldn't in a prior one?" Because the writer of this episode didn't give a shit about that episode. "Why is Geordi acting like Reg is insane for being scared to use the transporter when Geordi had a transporter accident 3 episodes ago?" The episodes are standalone unless they specifically mention prior episodes. When Riker is about to kamikaze suicide bomb the Enterprise into the Borg cube, Wesley is the only child the writer is thinking of. Star Trek is not real life, the Enterprise is not a real place, and there are no children or families on the Enterprise until some writer comes on and writes them to be on there, whereupon the next writer will come along and forget that children are on the Enterprise. Star Trek before DS9 is an eternal memoryhole.

The most important similarity of Deep Space Nine to Babylon 5 is that neither of them is Star Trek. I can explain all your supposed TNG inconsistencies. What you can’t explain is why Sisko is still butthurt about human racism centuries after it was eradicated whereas Uhura was unoffended by it a hundred years before he was born. DS9 was nothing more than Ira Behr’s middle finger to Roddenberry. Nothing but an empty shell. Treat it as such.

But it is interesting, right? Dixon hill is playing on the trope. Hardboiled PI in a dingy office with a wise cracking secretary and a dime-piece femme-fatal dame walks in and drags him into a mystery and the PI's sarcastic inner-monologue is narrating the whole thing. That's THE image. That's what TNG was playing off in the '80s. And probably since the '70s-onwards. That's been the trope. That's what get's referenced and parodied. But, it's surprising how few noir flicks are even like that. Off the top of my head, The Dark Corner (1946) is closest to be the only one that's that exact thing.

I just watched the Seinfeld 'sode where they're making their NBC pilot. Like a few days ago. And one of the actors they're auditioning steals a box of raisins . A little reference to that incident.

And the Weaton story is better with the quotes:
>In 1988, Tierney played the role of a tough holodeck gangster in an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation. In between scenes Tierney encountered the teenage Wil Wheaton on the steps outside Paramount Stage 16 and asked him if he played football. When Wheaton replied that he didn't, Tierney responded by saying "Why the hell not? What are you, some kind of sissy faggot?". When Wheaton replied that he was not strong enough to play football, Tierney said "Well, maybe you wouldn't be so weak if you played football!".

The Enterprise's consistent characterisation as "travelling space embassy with kids running around playing" absolutely got trashed after senile Gene got jettisoned into space. For the majority of the series run, the Enterprise is consistently characterised as a military-but-totally-not-because-we-don't-do-that-in-the-future vessel like how the TOS ship was. There are intermittent returns to the original show's ethos, but they are largely disregarded and form minor diversions to the ongoing themes of the show, and for all purposes do not factor into the writing of 99% of the episodes and the motivations of the characters therein.

I know you are an ESL pajeet who feebly clings to the few words he managed to make out many posts previous so this is all wasted on your feeble mind. However, one must strive to lift up the rabble. My last reply to you until you grow a brain, or perhaps take a shower.

Barclay because he has absolutely zero charisma and is a lowly holodeck coomer. LaForge is also a holodeck coomer, but he’s in a key leader ship role on the Enterprise and can actually physically speak to women without becoming flustered. He’s just not great at picking them up. Kim had a long term girlfriend, but outside of that is like Geordi in the way that he has little game. Reed is British therefore he’s slightly gay, but at the end of the day I just don’t think the guy cares at all. but the quark B plot is absolute kino
Anonymous No.213093080
if i would critique the B plot i'd say the ending is unsatisfying since gooner alien is just like "i'll ruin you" and then leaves and Quark doesn't really suffer anything except not getting paid. there should have been a sequel episode where he actually does fuck over Quark

I remember being 18 during the days of websites that you'd be able to watch shows online through megaupload links. I wanted to begin to watch Star Trek and decided to check out TNG because everyone online at the time was raving about it. I saw the pilot episode and immediately got turned off by it because it didn't look like they were on a spaceship at all, the bridged looked like an 80s penthouse with all the carpet and weird ceiling. I then checked out Enterprise because it was supposed to be a prequel before all the other stuff and was instantly drawn in to it because of the bridge looking like an actual spaceship and not a lounge.

And that's the story of how Enterprise was my first and only Star Trek show I ever watched and never bothered to watch anything else. I did enjoy it a lot though, maybe it was because I was in college, watching it through my gateway laptop alongside Battlestar Galactica. Simpler times

A bit soiled by the fact that there was a dwarf who was supposed to be doing that guy's character but he unironically sudoku'd when filming was almost complete.
That guy was brought in as a replacement and they made no effort to make him alien at all.

I absolutely despise when aliens are literally just humans and that's all.
AT LEAST Bajorans have that nose wrinkle.

Obviously Kim. Harry Kim had so many opportunities to bang it's ridiculous and he blew it every time. He could have scored with Seven, a hot Klingon babe, even his dead girlfriend was DTF but no, he could never seal the deal. Eventually Laforge gets his shit together and there are multiple cuties that have the hots for him, but he does come in at a close second. Malcolm Reed absolutely slays the pussy, especially with Trip as his wingman. Those two put out a Reed Alert on every humanoid female in the quadrant.

He was literally stabbed in the heart and saved by space magic medicine over a billiards match. That seems less an obstacle than simple drunken shenanigans gone wrong. Peripherally related story: I remember a buddy of mine had his leg shattered when a truck hit him on his 19th birthday because we were all plastered. We kept drinking after the ambulance took him away. I wonder if he’s a Starfleet captain now

NTA but you're getting autistic over semantics. The message is the same if you shift the stabbed through the heart to gutshot or something and remove the sci-fi medicine angle altogether. How the hell could you miss the basic lesson of Tapestry?
