And yeah I have to share the sentiment to read the manga You skip so much filler and "ARRRGGGHHHH!!!" animation crap that the animes have. I will make one complainant that starting with Tien's introduction you get a lot of characters introduced who then don't get time to shine or be relevant once the series becomes Goku and Vegeta plus jobber friends. The power spikes become crazy - Tien is like the strongest human, then soon after you have Piccolo, then soon after that it's Raditz, THEN you get the literal power level shit with Vegeta's big friend whatshis name, the Saibamen, the Ginyu force, then Freiza. Fan edits are the way to go. I'm a boomer who grew up with OG DB/Z, and nostalgia be damned, the pacing is nightmarishly terrible.

I'd also recommend checking out One Piece if you like DB. I think it does a better job of retaining that adventure/humorous tone of early DB, while also having plenty of emotional/hype moments as well, plus the worldbuilding and character development runs circles around DB. That said, either read the manga or check out the "One Pace" fan edit that cuts out the filler. The pacing in the regular anime is even worse than DB.

I'm on episode 279 of DBZ. It's been a drag. I don't think this series is meant to be watched in close succession. I had only ever seen a bit of the Buu saga years ago on CN. When Toriyama died, I started watching through the sub of DB and then onto DBZ. I like a lot of it, but I think the 'gag' part of it ruins what should be more serious. Base form Frieza felt really sinister and I think he was ruined as he leveled up. Piccolo is my favorite.

There are some really great moments, but around DBZ Goku starts to get like this:
