Thank you anon, all correct but there are also 1.85:1 dolby cinemas. That's what I would recommend for the avatar 2 re-release and avatar 3.
Also, Cameron is one of the few directors who does true 3d and therefore the avatar films are some of the rare films that dolby cinema chooses to do 3d showings for.

yeah I love this too and hate the fake shit. Seeing the film in high framerate in dolby was so good I went multiple times. The tech was amazing.

Do your research before you buy a ticket. My city has two AMC's with Dolby Cinema. One was a stand alone theater and had a larger screen. They were showing Avatar TWOW in 3D for all their showings and was projected in 1.85:1. The other AMC was attached to a shopping mall and had dine-in amenities. They're screen projected in 2.39:1 and had no 3D showings at all.
