I kinda liked the CD era where movies would sometimes have official soundtrack CDs where almost none of the songs are in the movie
>>213094100The original is probably high in my top slashers list, so I'm skeptical about a remake. They used a director in the original who had mostly made western movies and he wouldn't shoot any of the scenes of violence and the assistant director had to, but it somehow still turned out great. I think he went on to make a bunch of Christian movies.
>>213094100They offered it to Joe Begos but he made his own Christmas slasher instead.

I have a decent VHS collection but it's mostly just stuff I happened across IRL. Also I'm a little picky about it. Obviously something made with home video or TV in mind is going to present better than something that was intended to be watched in a theater only.

>>213095655>Theoretically, clarityThey can skip and get scratched. Digital seems more reliable. People will argue vinyl is the highest quality recording. And cassettes have the analog appeal. The audio on CDs is extremely compressed and very low quality, so I don't know.
>>213095821I have some holga and lomo cameras somewhere. They're a cute gimmick but if I'm going to develop my own film I'm going to be that guy who talks about HARSH FLASH.
>>213091185photorealistic portrait tattoos look great when they're fresh like this, but they age like absolute donkey shit. There's a reason why the classic sailor and japanese tattoos have more hard lines and less shading.

>>213095995Yeah but the target audience doesn't care they just go HOLD SHID.... SPWINGTWAP!
They just don't make kinos like this anymore.
>>213095847Nice, I was into photography for a while and had some too. I had a SuperHeadz Digital Harinezumi, they were digital but supposed to look like 8mm film, and lost it. Now they sell for a ton because they quit making it. I was searching for it and saw Kodak is putting out a digital super 8mm camera. I want to shoot a horror movie on this
https://www.kodak.com/en/motion/product/super-8/super-8-camera/
>>213095384>they have an analog texture to them that nothing else really reproducesThe "effect" tends to be overhyped and fetishized by people who didn't grow up with the technology. A lot of people who try to process video by dumping to VHS and then redigitizing are often disappointed by how much of the signal is preserved. The "analog texture" that people recreate with plugin suites now tends to be more of something you'd see on home videos that were recorded at a super low tape speed on cheap tapes, recorded over several times, and stored poorly in a box in a basement or attic. I get it. I collect vinyl records and people used to prattle on about the "warmth" all the time. That exists to a minor degree, but I think most people should just be real and admit that they do it because it's a little different, and it's fun to treasure hunt.
>I don't know if there's anything redeemable about CDsCDs have really great clarity in sound. The music on a commercial CD is uncompressed which is more than you can say for both mp3s as well as streaming formats (and that goes double when it's delivered to your ears via bluetooth). It's a detail thing, but the higher quality can end up making something that used to sound kind of trite feel more profound and elegantly understated. You can rip the uncompressed audio from a CD to a computer pretty easily, but the filesize is not insignificant, and it can become problematic if you are an avid collector of music. I still collect vinyl but while there are communities dedicated to super high quality rips from vinyl records, if I'm pirating audio I'll tend to look for uncompressed audio ripped from CDs.
Interest in CDs is starting to crop up in certain niches, and when you go to record stores (at least in larger cities), you can see a couple of 20-something hipster kids making sure that everyone sees them ONLY digging through the CD collection and not bothering with any of the vinyl. Pretty funny how things change.
>>213095821>The audio on CDs is extremely compressed and very low qualityThat's why i said "theoretically", CDs have the capability of a clarity of sound beyon vinyl, but retarded engineers will just compress the fuck out of everything.
>>213096048The descent into the tomb is absolute kino, i love the final 20 minutes of this film.
randomly stumbled across this and i'm pretty amazed at how I've never heard of it before and how little love it seems to have gotten for something that wasn't some $5 budget shot on video shit. not a masterpiece but it's fun and the creature effects are genuinely creepy (for the zombie kids at least, the last act creatures are more on the camp side but still great).
thank you for the suckling reccomendation anon if you see this
fuckin hell
what's with all the mosquitos lately?
>>213095821>They can skip and get scratchedThis is a bigger issue with low quality CDRs. Same thing with disc rot which is a bigger problem of the mylar storing the actual data literally rotting. Disc rot is less of an issue with commercial CDs though they can have problems with scratches if they're abused which result in skipping. That doesn't affect the actual data. The scratch is usually a superficial mark in the plastic disc, not the data itself which is on the other side and usually has a protective layer above that. There are disc buffers that can usually buff the scratch out.
>Digital seems more reliableIf you're storing audio that is equivalent to the quality you'll get on CD, a collection can end up taking up a significant amount of hard drive space. You also have to worry about hard drive crashes so you'll need to invest in backups (either local drives or an offsite cloud solution, or both).
>People will argue vinyl is the highest quality recording. Those people are full of shit. I love vinyl and am an avid collector, but I'm a realist and I make my living in audio. Vinyl relies heavily on additional components that color the sound. Everything from the weight of the arm on your turntable to the type of stylus you use to the preamp, etc (and that says nothing of the condition of the record itself). People enjoy vinyl collecting but anyone who says it's higher quality than CDs is objectively wrong.
>The audio on CDs is extremely compressed That's very very very incorrect. Vinyl and cassette are a more lossy process (vinyl especially requires special mastering because too much energy in certain frequency areas can cause the needle to skip so they need to be filtered out), and digital streaming is EXTREMELY compressed both for storage reasons as well as speed of delivery. This isn't up for debate. You can view how much information is lost on spectrogram.
>>213096579it's nice, and yeah the zombie kids look amazing.
Pity the last act ends on nothing basically, sad because with higher budget it could definitely be amazing and a true classic

>>213096579I'll watch this tonight
>>213096376>retarded engineers will just compress the fuck out of everythingWhen it comes to music, there are two different types of compression that can get confusing. There's audio compression, and there's data compression.
Audio compression isn't a bad thing, though it gets a bad name. People don't know what it is, but they hear obnoxious retards complaining about "over-compression" and then parrot that. Compression can fix problems in a recording and it can also be used as an artistic effect. There are also styles of music that tend to sound more "correct" with liberal use of compression, while others use less. If you mixed a pop vocalist the same way you mixed an opera singer, it would sound fucking awful. That's not a problem with the singer or the compression, it's just not the right sound.
Most of the issues with audio compression are a result of the "loudness wars" where engineers were trying to make everything feel louder on the radio. When you A/B two tracks (even if it's different versions of the same track), people will tend to think whichever one is slightly louder sounds better. Compression technically makes things quieter (you basically automate the process of yanking the volume down when something gets too loud), but taming those peaks allows you to boost the overall level to compensate. So the loud parts get quieter and the quieter parts get louder. Most pop music tends to sound better with liberal amounts of compression. People complain about lack of dynamics, but if you had the same sort of dynamics in a pop song that you have in an opera it would sound like absolute shit. It's kind of like complaining about distorted guitars. There are some situations where they'd ruin a song, but there are other times when that's the exact sound you need.
>>213096658As far as home audio, we were told
>highest resolution source you can access is the highest quality non-sampled analog source file. The highest-resolution analog medium is high-speed reel-to-reel tape, closely followed by vinylHowever, when digging a little I did find a reddit thread that agrees with you. And I'm not saying it in a negative way, I can see how uncompressed would be superior. I may have an association between MP3s and CDs causing bias, but another article puts them only above cassette tapes
>>213097028>Most of the issues with audio compression are a result of the "loudness wars" where engineers were trying to make everything feel louder on the radioThat's what i was referring to. But clearly you're way more knowledgeable about this than me.
>>213096376>>213097028DATA compression is completely different. More compression is worse. This is unfortunately a necessary part of distribution, but basically, uncompressed audio takes up a lot of space. A 3 minute raw audio track might be 50+ mb depending on a variety of parameters. In the days when people collected digital audio (like mp3s), 50mb was too much - especially since it was a time when a 4gb hard drive was considered to be impossibly huge. In order to get the audio to take up less space, algorithms were developed to make the files smaller. This is accomplished in a lot of nerdy ways, but a couple that are easier to wrap your head around...super high frequencies that may live outside the realm of perception for most humans? Filter those out. Super low frequencies that you can't really hear? Filter those out. That won't get you too far, so then you start taking out slices. If you had a drawing and every 5mm you cut out a 1mm strip, you could still tell what the drawing was supposed to be of. If you get really close, you can see the cut outs, but when you back up, you'll have a harder time noticing. This is a huge part of what compression algorithms do. They remove slices. The heavier the compression, the more slices (and bigger chunks) are removed.
This can be hard to notice at first. If you have no frame of reference, you could listen to a heavily compressed piece of music and not really know that it's necessarily compressed. However, if you compare it to the uncompressed version, you may start to hear differences. It really depends on how discerning your ears are, but it could be something like noticing the trailing decay on the cymbals sounds more natural, or perhaps it sounds like there's more dimension and depth to the sound. And when it comes to those frequencies that you may not hear, you may notice that it "feels" different. The high frequencies can contribute a sense of air, while the low frequencies create rumble
>>213096658>>213097028This is /hor/, not the Steve Hoffman forums so unfortunately these posts will likely go over 80% of anon's heads ITT.
>2025
>still no new Dentist horror
>>213097028>>213097232In recent years, the issues with compression have flipped. Mixing engineers will still sometimes heavily compress audio in a track, however more often than not, it's an artistic choice as opposed to attempting to get something louder. This is partially because the main method of audio distribution these days is digital streaming which will often impart a "loudness penalty" if your music is perceived as too loud. That's not as big a deal as some musicians would have you believe since they'll just crank the level of your album or track down on their server side, but it incentivizes over-compression a lot less. People will now mix so something sounds good over simply trying to get it louder.
DATA compression, on the other hand, is a HUGE fucking problem. Streaming services like Spotify are able to deliver any song you want to hear instantly because they heavily compress the audio. There's a reason you can click play and the music from a server a million miles away can deliver without load times. (It also saves them money on storage space). Same goes for youtube or literally anything else. If you listen to music via bluetooth (which most people do these days), then the bluetooth tech is even further compressing the audio data as a necessary part of it's protocol.

>>213103216nta but Winona is pretty /hor/ when you think about it. Beetlejuice, BSD, Alien Resurrection. Apparently some horror film I've never seen called called Lost Souls as well.
>>213103264Of course, Beetlejuice is a classic. There are plenty of actresses that star in both horror and arthouse, all three in that pic fitting the criteria.
>>213097269Yuzna already cornered the market, but other than his films this is the only other I can think of that broaches the topic.

>>213102834>>213103216>Anon looks at the camera and reads off my bank details>>213103264Lost Souls is the ultimate case study of what a cinematographer does and what a director does. It was directed by Steven Spielberg's mainstay DoP but it's barely even enjoyable on a visual level because it's just "overshot". It makes you understand that the director basically functions as tard wrangler for the cinematographer who wants every shot to be a dutch angle, big crazy zoom, visual pottery, whatever. Even shots of hands turning doorknobs shot at a wacky angle. To signify the doorknob is having a mental breakdown I guess? Winona is wearing a wig in it too. Do not recommend!
Also I hate Alien 4. Siggy said at a panel a while back that Winona had an Alien poster on her wall growing up, so you hate that she had to be in the worst one, written by J*ss Wh*don.

That part (along with another much more annoying moment that you'll know when you see it) drags it down even if the stuff about Leviathan and such is neat.
Tee bee aitch, as much as I love even the shitty parts of the franchise, I think the reboot universe has more potential than the original because they might be able to actually have some consistency put in place because the first one liked to change rules and lore on a whim even within the same piece of media.

Nothing fucking happens in the movie until that last third. It's all slow build up, and the end is the payoff where the shit hits the fan.

>>213111069It's pretty comfy. /tv/'s favourite underage drinker and weed smoker (because dude it fucking rocks!) Soapy T guest appears in a couple of episodes as Regan in flashbacks. The second season has no connection to the movie and is just a standalone story, which is not to say it's not still good, but it predictably got the show cancelled due to ratings plummeting without a steady supply of member berries. It's basically two long movies, it's not an exorcism of the week deal.
>>213111386Demons 2 had cutiepie Asia, he grew to expect her presence at baseline, not act as a plus I guess.
>>213103501>is Hellraiser the hardest franchise to get through? Some of the later ones weren't written to be Hellraiser movies, but since the studio owned the rights and wanted to use them before they expired, they re-wrote it to have Pinhead as the main antagonist. There's no 'part of the franchise' about them because they weren't meant to be sequels.
>>213103501>Is Hellraiser the hardest franchise to get through? No, that candle belongs to Children of the Corn, the Howling, Puppetmaster and Amityville Horror.

>>213103501>Is Hellraiser the hardest franchise to get through? Not if you stop after Hellraiser 3.
>>213113695He probably does have people working under him that help with the scripts but they're not bad enough that the average person cares. But if he was a bit more self aware he would stay far away from trying to make anything that requires genuine serious dramatic scenes and only make movies like Upgrade or Invisible Man forever which doesn't need a good script just an entertaining concept then you have a script doctor team to revise and fix your dialogue. Wolf Man's script fails because he's trying to be very serious
Also the actual wolfman looks retarded in the movie. It looks like they straight up ripped off the design from Until Dawn or The Quarry but only the face so it just looks like a shirtless hairy crackhead.
>>213113867>they're not bad enough that the average person caresGo to any normie website and the biggest criticism was the script, particularly the characters. Which was probably because of
