>>213095902 (OP)I think Polanski is literally a Satanist so the movie feels quite real. >>213096213Bingo. And Polanski is definitely a satanist lol. We're talking about the man that made Rosemary's Baby. He's 91 and doesn't look a day over 70. The whole Sharon Tate thing was an MK Ultra opp that he was complicit in. For what it's worth I love the movie too. Check out Ghost Writer if you haven't. Nothing occult but the vibes are similar.
>>213097779I watched Ghost Writer years ago specifically because I asked this board for movies like the Ninth Gate lol. It may even have been you that recommended it if you were around back then.
Rosemary's baby is another straight up Satanic movie but it's a lot more pure horror. Ninth Gate is really an oddity for the whole vibe it has.
>>213095917No it is not. The end is worse than the film.
>>213097877I may have but that was only because someone in a Ninth Gate thread recommended it to me first. I put off watching it for years because the plot synopsis makes it sound really bland but there's a lot going on in that movie. I should have trusted Polanski given that he literally sold his soul to be good at making movies.
The score especially but the sound design in general deserve a lot of praise. Every scene where people are handling books is so pleasing to the ear.

>The real occult is almost entirely about summoning demons and lucifer/satan(opinions vary as to whether these are really the same entity) is by far the most well known demon. It is not. At all. "Real occult" is about transcending the suffering and pointlessness of human existence in order to find meaning while living on earth as a human. It has little to nothing to do with summoning demons, satan worship, or any sort of worship in general. It's usually individual and private exercises.
>>213098849I'm not trying to be a dick but I just don't think you have any clue what you're talking about. "Transcending the suffering and pointlessness of human existence" is just every major religion ever. The occult has been hidden since Christianity took over but most Pagan practices and much of things like Hinduism and shamanism are the same general thing.
They all involve communing with "spirits', "entities", "gods", "demons" etc. These practices range from simple meditation to reach them to rituals involving blood sacrifices to achieve specific goals.

You seem like a nice guy and I appreciate the "i'm not trying to be a dick comment", but this really shows off your naivety:
>I have personally spoken to dozens of occultists who summon demons, I'm not just making this up. They write books about it. Look at the infamous GrimoiresThat's literallly "my dad works at Nintendo" energy. Next you're going to tell me that when Crowley preached "sacrificing children" he actually meant ritualistically murdering innocent children.
Occultism isn't about summoning ACTUAL demons and creatures during rituals. The point of the ritual is to "get you into the moment." Like foreplay with your wife. Your end goal is to cum, obviously, but you're going to have better results in the future if you focus on making sure she's having a good time as well. So you "go through the motions" instead of just rushing in and stuffing your dick in and cumming asap.
The fake cosplaying of "summoning demons and angels" just gets people into the zone and helps make the spiritual growth more impactful.
>>213099173Bro you cannot seriously be saying CROWLEY was not summoning demons. I mean come on lol. I don't think think Crowley necessarily was killing kids because that's certainly pretty rare but sacrifices involving his own blood or semen or killing an animal? That is very common in occultism. Crowley even stated himself that human sacrifice was the most effective form of ritual but he didn't want to do it himself.
I can literally post books and forums of demon summoners if you want
>>213099310>Crowley even stated himself that human sacrifice was the most effective form of ritual but he didn't want to do it himself. It was tongue in cheek. Crowley was an asshole with a sense of humor. "Human sacrifice" means cumming during sex magick but not cumming inside the woman. Therefore you aren't procreating, therefore it is "child sacrifice"
Same context when the sex magick involves men only and no women.
>>213099310>Bro you cannot seriously be saying CROWLEY was not summoning demons.Crowley tried everything with an open mind. This is where you and I are losing touch. Crowley would do rituals to see what would happen, not necessarily because he was expecting a particular outcome or believed in the ritual itself.
You and I can not believe in Santa Clause, but we can also still exchange gifts on christmas morning. The ritual still happens even though neither of us actually believe in the "god" (santa) we are summoning. But that doesn't mean we don't get the good christmas morning feeling/vibes that was the desired outcome of the christmas gift ritual.
>I can literally post books and forums of demon summoners if you wantNot necessary.
>>213099459I'm honestly a bit baffled by you. You claim to be an occultist but think demon summoning is just a meme?
Crowley definitely thought it was real. He said that a butcher died because he wrote the name of a demon he was working with on a receipt from the butchers shop. And what about the whole Lam working? Do you know Jack Parsons? He also very clearly believed demons were real.
And why don't you want me to provide evidence of what I'm saying by posting books and forums?
>>213096167>they got rid of the actual plot of the novel so they got a streamlined movie but a lesser narrativeThe book was clunky, with a poor plot ending, and completely different in tone.

>>213099739It seems like a slightly faulty epistemic posture to simply declare that when occultists talk about summoning demons, and give every indication they are actually doing so, that it's just some kind of elaborate inside joke.
Pic related is an example of the ritual declaration which a certain sect of Satanists write with their own blood to give themselves to him. They talk about communing directly with him, he speaks in their minds, he causes apparitions and hallucinations, he orchestrates their lives for them by seeing random chance, all according to them of course.
>>213099875What meaning does an Instagram screenshot have?
I can go to my bookshelf right now and take photos of Crowley's Book of Lies when he refers to his greatest self as Perdurabo and the Eye of Hoor and then open up LIber 777 and show that Eye of Hoor has the qaballistic equivalent of "butthole"
So he was cleverly calling himself an asshole in one of his most popular books whose entire point was to be "interpreted" because it was full of "secrets"
We keep getting back to my main point which is you need to stop taking everything so literally and at face value.
If Crowley wrote in a book that he flew to Mars and impregnated 900 martians would you believe him? Of course you wouldn't. So why believe that he believed in summoning "demons"
>>213099985Have you ever done one of these rituals yourself?
>>213099875>summoning demons, and give every indication they are actually doing so, that it's just some kind of elaborate inside joke. And again - let me bring back my Christmas morning analogy.
I don't believe in santa.
You don't believe in santa.
But there is a certain feeling that gift giving on christmas morning that no other time throughout the year captures.
So you and I can exchange gifts on christmas morning, both say they are from santa, and feel that christmas warmth and christmas spirit without every actually believing in Santa. without ever actually believing santa provided the gifts.
It's all a ritual and exercise whose goal is a desired outcome that we both achieved without ever actually believing santa is real.

I was wondering what's up with both of these movies coming out in 1999 and I then I remembered what that decade leading up to it was all about: The X-Files. On the face of it, since neither movie has anything to do with aliens or government you would think 'eh, nah' - but the theme is conspiracy. Shadow group, hidden power, and in the Ninth Gate case, 'bringing something about', too. There's a thread from that 'end of the millennium' 'something's going to happen but we have no idea what' tension, through the X-files, to Ninth Gate.
Of course these two movies are from books and probably long considered by their creators, but there's a question of which project gets picked, both by polanski/kubrick out of their ideas, and by the people financing, 'green lighting' etc. The 90s had a 'conspiracy' mood, entirely due to X-Files, and so I think without it these movies would not have happened, or not in 1999.
See also the 2000 game deus ex (aka 'the conspiracy') for another example and maybe 'the holy blood and the holy grail' as another influence, certainly on that game, it's where the French angle with the old Chateau concept comes into it. But you also see that kind of location in these movies
>>213098058I watched Ghost Writer tonight, and while not as good as the Ninth Gate, I enjoyed it.

>>213102404if you go back further, the entire thing got kicked off in 1987 by Angel Wings... being an almost 2 decades long hiatus beforehand
also there was a resurrection of interest in JFK conspiracy theories at the end of the 1980s (see Slacker from 1990s which captures the zeitgeist)... I'm highlighting just two cases from 1992:
>In JFK: The Last Dissenting Witness, a 1992 biography of Jean Hill, Bill Sloan wrote that Warren Commission assistant counsel Arlen Specter attempted to humiliate, discredit, and intimidate Hill into changing her story. Hill also told Sloan that she was abused by Secret Service agents, harassed by the FBI, and received death threats.>Documents under Section 5 of the President John F. Kennedy Assassination Records Collection Act of 1992 were required to be released within 25 years of October 26, 1992.I'm not saying it inspired the X-Files, rather that they had a common origin.

The book was good, as was โNevermoreโ, another Hjortsberg book, which sort of reminds me of โThe Ravenโ from 2012, starring John Cusack.
Both books are in the same vein as The Ninth Gate.
>>213098058how the fuck do you miss rosemary's baby on that list when it's basically a spiritual prequel to the ninth gate
>>213102829>smoking bad but the natural oil and moisture in your hands actually helps the books conserve themselves>only brutes like auctioneers or those who scan them need to wear glovesThe natural oils in oneโs hands are not good for books, other than maybe leather covers, but even that is questionable.
The reason bare hands are now suggested, is that people wearing gloves, particularly gloves that donโt fit well, tend to be clumsy and are more likely yo damage the old books.
Also, older rag paper is incredibly durable, even the lower quality stuff, especially compared to a lot of โmodern paperโ.
Simply having people wash their hands with an alkaline soap, and properly drying their hands, tends to mitigate issues.

Admittedly, the older system was to make people wear gloves.
The newer system, is to have people handling items was and dry their hands with the right type of soap.
This is for books.
Other material handling preferences vary.
Metal handling seems to routinely involve gloves made from nitrile, but not always.
As for paper, it was Dard Hunter, one of the Worldโs foremost paper experts who commented about the durability of older rag paper.

>>213104844Wow, Chinatown & Macbeth unwatchable? That surprises me. Polanski's Macbeth was so influential for every continual adaptation of the Shakespeare play, with its influence even leaking into theatre productions. It has such gorgeous medieval costume design, and beautiful displays of lighting. The ending fight is the best sword-fight in cinema I've seen.
>>213104932>perfect castingJohnny Depp is too hammy
the girl has monkeeface syndrome and those eyebrows look atrocious (as they do on 99.9% women who dye their hair)
but I agree on the other points
the intro was nice too no matter what that other anon said
>>213105226I dunno maybe I've seen too many movies
>no kind words for Chinatownpeople were brainwashed by Channel Z (which showed it several times A WEEK) into liking it and it became a meme
>>213105255>monkeeface syndromeWhat nigga?
>>213095902 (OP)Polanski just being good at directing regardless of his affinity for molesting underage girls
I know the girl just happened to be the latest chick Polanski was banging or whatever, but she comes across and appropriately weird, bored, older than she appears, etc. It's either great casting despite the yokoism, or one of the luckiest happenstances in film.
>>213105481Yeah, art from the artist. If Jeffrey fucking Epstein painted the Sistine Chapel I'd still think and admit was cool.
>>213095917Written by the same guy who wrote the Alatriste books. That shit is 16th century swashbuckling kino of the highest order, such a shame we will never see a good adaptation
>>213105770What does she see in the manlet Polack?
>>213106272Bitter Moon should be mandatory viewing for anyone who wants to post on /tv/
>>213095902 (OP)The same things as in Silence of the Lambs. HQ hokum.
I love Balkan so fucking much, right down to his unbreakable PIN codes:

>be Corso
>see his PIN code
>steal all his shit
>take Liana up her offer
>I can fix her
>>213106272How do I cope with the fact I will never be with such a woman
>>213106537Pay a professional for the momentary illusion
>>213106361Kinda arousing scene , but why should people need to watch it to post?
>>213106537 A lot of women arent into being doms and the ones that are usually are taken or mental.
It looks great. I remember watching it and thinking that even random throwaway scenes just looked ric and compelling in some way. The score is great. I think the plot does a good balance of occult and mundane, it makes it intriguing but still grounded. The woman is very sexy, and while her character is obviously stronger, more capable, better informed than Corso she's not a horrible bitch and she doesn't overshadow him as the main character, which is something screenwriting has completely lost.

>>213106631Because I want them to
>>213106836good enough reason as any I guess

How did he do it
>>213099071>LuciferLucifer is Depp, she's just some demon
>>213108893Rewatched Angel Heart recently, it's good but nowhere near Ninth Gate level. The director loved to make movies about dismal wet enviroments where mold seeps off walls, it was literally his fetish. Angel Heart is a really good noir movie.
>>213095902 (OP)Is that Charls Carrol from Million Dollar Extreme?
not enough old book fiddling

>>213111696Bitter Moon > Frantic > Ninth Gate in terms of her roles
Ninth Gate is a better movie than Frantic though
>>213095902 (OP)This meme has got to die. Decent film, nothing special. Polanski-sama's got many films which are way better.
>>213111468>Lucifer is Depp, she's just some demonQRD?
>>213112101He's the devil being guided back into hell, that's the gist of it. For some reason he has amnesia. He's even styled like the devil.
Red Rooms has a really nice Ninth Gate feel to it.
>>213098058>>213103743The Body is really underrated out of those.
I do miss a good old religious kinos though, lately we got Nefarious, which is probably as good as it gonna get in current times and Late Night With The Devil was fun if shlocky, but still.
>>213097779Ahh sweet a schizo thread

>>213098058day of the beast (1995) is very similar in theme and vibes to the ninth gate
How come there's no Lovecraft kino about people trying to get their hands on a Necronomicon or something and then getting fucked up when they accidentally summon something they can't handle
>>213099173>Occultism isn't about summoning ACTUAL demons and creatures during rituals.oh yes it is, you're just more familiar with cosplayers than actual Occultists.

>>213113528BENEATH THE VERY STONE OF BRENNENBURG

>>213114442He has an even worse movie than that, some Italian coproduction
Seigner and Lena Olin helped. Itโs funny how Polanski and Wiseman let Depp and Pharrell to โcuckโ their wives in their movies.
>Here, sir, the book you requested. It's 500 years old and only one copy of it remains...
>Thank you.

It's just so damn comfy.
I feel like every time I watch it I want to start collecting old books and chill in a old style library
>>213095902 (OP)Dark academia + occult adventure kino without gayshit
>>213102404I agree to this, but I must say without Twin Peaks there would be no X-Files.
>>213113457Not quite what you are asking for, but In the Mouth of Madness (1994) is comfy lovecraft kino.
The way things are going I doubt we would ever get proper Lovecraft kino outside of indie stuff. We need to go back to analog and stopmotion.

>>213115651nothing comes close to being as visually kino as smoking a cigarette in good lighting
>>213103237i have the opposite feeling, i like the first 40 mins set in new york, the aesthetic and feeling is great, coney island, the diner, the docs place upstate. i cant stand the rest set in the south, new orleans/louisiana doesnt interest me in general, and i watch the last 10 minutes cos the ending is great where they tie it all up
>>213115845True. I used to smoke and one of the main things I miss is that aesthetic. Even when it was just me chilling I felt like a badass.
>>213115651>>213115845its not just the visuals but the audio in the ninth gate is fantastic
the flip of every page of paper, the clank of the cigarette lighter, the thud of every footstep
its wonderful to listen too.
this movie is the reason i purchased the following, its not old but it is beautiful and a fascinating read

Harrison Ford has ruined lots of movies
>>213117412No he was great. Frantic just has weird pacing and is kinda boring to watch until Emanuelle shows up halfway through the movie. Bit too procedural, probably a remnant of Polanski's shit era that preceded it.

>>213118422To be fair Polanski has the better take on the "elite" in the ninth gate. He calls them out as being pretenders and not genuine seekers.
Old idiots and their mumbo jumbo
>>213118841but eyes wide shut called out the bourgeoisie, not the elites... the elites did nothing wrong, it was all in the mind of Tom Cruise (much like The Game, but played straight)
>>213119005>the elites did nothing wrongthrowing big orgies is fucking dumb and they do it in both films
regardless the real rewards are for a man like corso and it is not material/money
If you want more of a similar atmosphere you should unironically play Gabriel Knight 3, the graphics are kinda ass, like that early 3d from the late 90s, but the story is heavily steeped in occultism and esoterism
