The movie was solid but felt a bit small since like a good half of it was a montage sequence.
Actually it felt fakey like one of those Wandavision episodes. The retro-futurism and 50s/60s americana plus the weird pacing.

On top of that it was immediately established this takes place in a different universe than the main MCU stuff, so the stakes were irrelevant. If they all lived or died or whatever mattered little. It's also obvious they'll get ported over to the main universe so all this "will Galactus destroy Earth" nonsense is irrelevant really.

It's not a problem with good writing. Fantastic Four comics have had several great runs and storylines with Franklin existing. Sometimes he is the problem and it's a "STOP MY OMNIPOTENT SON" storyline, other times Franklin just depowers himself so he can be a normal kid, other times he's having a side story where him and his sister are sneaking off and having an adventure while the FF are fighting for their lives. At the end of the day it just needs good writing which MCU doesn't have. The stakes in most FF stories aren't even the team dying, but a sci-fi problem they're trying to solve. You're right that Franklin is an instafix for "2 groups of people run at each other like retards and fight to the death" storylines, but the FF comics don't really do that, sadly it's all the MCU has.
