These movies are made with the expectations of them easily making a billion dollars or more domestically

This genre of comic book summer blockbuster has gone significantly downhill in terms of quality in regards to effects, plot and catering to an audience and demographics that couldn't care less about it. The west, particularly the anglosphere, is the place where the concept of superheroes has been the most ingrained.
To an American the idea of a superhero is just a part of life, kids and even adults will ask each other who their favorite costumed crime-fighter is.

In the developed world people are moving away from going to see movies in theaters in general.
Which is why Man of Steel still made more in America than Superman despite being seen as more of a divisive flop than the present movie.
